I didn't "click" with the first NUT I met with. She was so snarky, she didn't seem compassionate. This was on the initial consult! She put out a 1/4 c. measuring cup and asked, "that's how much food you will get in the beginning, can you live with that?" I said, "I couldn't now, but maybe with 85% of my stomach cut out that won't be such a big deal. I don't know."

I quickly got rid of that team, including the doctor.

My doctor now is a NUT, so I don't have to see two different people and she's a lot nicer!

My nut comes with my surgeons bariactric surgery package. I have to use her unless I go somewhere else for my surgery. So I just have to suck it up.

I absolutely understand where you are coming from. I am in the same boat. I have to do a 6 month monitored nutrition plan with my nutritionist. BEfore she told us she is lookin for some changes in our eating. Once a month I have to submit my food diary. My first food diary I submitted to her she chews me out. I felt so ashamed because I did begin to change my eating. Well the next month I was able to really be on my (a) game.

Just try to do your best! Best wishes!

I'm sorry, but I feel like I am reading a thread from the 1970s. Who doesn't know that shaming, embarrassing and judging overweight people really just has the opposite effect -- usually makes them eat more.

We're all adults, we know what to eat to be healthy. I dare say most of us long-term dieters have been to enough NUTs, dietitians, WW meetings and read enough diet books to be NUTs ourselves!

My NUT is there for help and support. She is a skinny triathlete, very young but totally professional. Probably never had a weight problem herself, but doesn't pass judgement. She went over the pre and post op diet phases, made suggestions and is there at every post op support group --to be supportive. If I have a question about a food or Vitamin, I can call or email and she is very responsive.

If I choose not to follow the recommendations, well then that's on me.

I'm self pay so don't have to do the nutritionist thing, but I've seen three different NUT in the past. They were all supportive, but they never seemed to really **know** their stuff the way nurses and doctors do. I felt as though they were just giving rote responses parroted from a textbook somewhere, and their advice had all the depth of a Cosmo article (whoa, veggies are better snack choice than candy, no way!!!)

I'm sure there are fantastic NUT out there, but I felt like my gastroenterologist was more helpful. YMMV.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
