Oh No Dumping Is The Pits!

Recommended Posts

Oh god I cannot believe this! I went for dinner tonight to a Thai place with hubby and another couple who don't know about my surgery (I'm 6 months out) after a couple of mouthfuls of a rich starter and a few mouthfuls of the main and a watered down glass of wine I started to feel sick and I mean really sick. Then everything went dizzy and an urgent need for the toilet and then I actually passed out AT THE TABLE!!

I came round pretty quick but was swearing g profusely and had chest pains and thought I was a gonner right there and then. I was taken hime immediately and felt a lot better after getting some air and straight to bed but this is by far the worst dumping attack I've ever had (only had 1 before after eating some sweets at the cinema) and this was 100 times worse.

There must have been a hell of a lot of sugar in that Thai food ~ I've had meals out with the odd glass of wine before and this has never happened. I cannot begin to describe my embarrassment and now dread this happening again. Nightmare :( :(

Almost same experience here, not near as bad though. Went to my nephews b-day party. I had about 3oz of hawaiin punch and one bite of cake. Took about 15 minutes and I stayed in the restroom for 20 minutes. Went home then to bed. Stay away from sweets! I'm craving Chinese food but i'm too scared to try it! lol

So do you all think it was definitely a case of dumping? I swear I was having a heart attack at one point I went white, had chest pains and sweat was pouring off me. Scarily similar symptoms! So how will I know the difference? This could be life and death if that doesn't sound over dramatic??

Sounds like gallbladder to me. Do you still have yours?

Yes! When I had gallbladder attacks it felt like I was having a heart attack every time. I didn't have stones but really thick sludge. They took it out. Much better!!! This is from Wags. Sometimes my ID shows up as lwagner. Don't know why.

My dr says sleevers don't get dumping, that it happens only with RNY and DS patients. I beg to differ with him. The only food that I can't eat is ice cream. I'm a slow learner and by the 5th time, I was literally sitting on the toilet for 2 hrs, stomach cramping so badly begging God to get me thru this and I promised I'd never eat ice cream again.

Occasionally I'll take 1 bite off hubbys ice cream and I'm ok. It's the scoop that gets me. Not sure if it's true "dumping" or not but it's close enuf for me!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
