I would not do it. I think it would be a slippery slope!

If you are smoke free for 6 mos you are doing fabulous. I'd try to stay away from ecig since you're doing so well.

I was a smoker and quite using ecig. My surgeon was ok with me using it. I am 2.5 weeks post op and still use it.

My husband and I both stopped smoking 3 years ago using an Ecig. I can tell you that for him the Ecig became a habit also and it took him a year to finally stop using it when I only used mine for 5 months total to stop smoking. He's made hints that he wants to start using it again with no nicotine recently. We talked about it and I let him know that I felt it would be a step towards smoking again. We've agreed that it's best to just not go backwards. It's just not worth the risk.

The one thing you have to remember with ecigs is that it still contains nicotine. During your pre-op labs they test for nicotine, because it is the nicotine that constricts the blood vessels. Now there are ecigs that are zero or very low nicotine like 5mg. I think they are called Squares or something like that. Since you have been 6 months nicotine-free, I wouldn't put the nicotine back. Try finding e-cigs that are 0mg nicotine.

I too was a smoker prior to having surgery. I am 45 and started smoking at 16. I have not smoked the entire time, there were spans of several years of not smoking and then a traumatic event would occur and smoking, along with food, would become my crutch to make it through the trying times. I quit smoking Sept. 1st and was sleeved 10/23/13 and have not missed the cigarettes that much. When I do, I remind myself that I underwent WLS to better my health and why would I want to sabotage that by putting tobacco back into my system.

Good luck in your weight loss journey, whatever your decision, but please try to remain nicotine free.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
