Were Your Children Allowed To Visit You?

Recommended Posts

So I got a surgery date for December 18th. I was looking through the informational packet they sent me home with today and on it I noticed that it said "no children under the age of 12 will be allowed in the surgery department". This is a HUGE problem for me as I have absolutely no family near by and my one and only support person Is my husband. My daughter is 3 years old and she will be with my husband at all times. So does this mean I won't be able to see them at all during my stay? As a personal choice I have decided not to tell anyone about the surgery except for my husband.

Were you allowed to have your children come visit you after you had the surgery and were settled into your room? I'm not sure if the no children allowed rule applies only to pre-surgery or both pre-surgery and after surgery?

My son is 2 and was not allowed in the surgical unit. Plus I told my husband I did not want him there for risk of illness and its not a place for a toddler. I chose not to tell others about my surgery so my hubby took our son to the babysitter during the day so he could visit and would be with our son at night.

My son was 5 when I had the band and 8 when I got my RNY. He was allowed to visit both times, though I don't really know why......it's was the pick me up I needed most.

I didn't realize my children were not suppose to visit me until after I was out of the hospital. But all 3 of them did without the nurses or anyone saying anything. They are all under the age of 10. Maybe you can ask ahead of time.

It says they're not allowed in the surgery unit - I suspect they are still allowed in your room. I would double check.

Mine weren't allowed because my dr has all of his sleeve patients sent to ICU after surgery for the night.

Mine were. They wouldn't have been allowed back in preop, but once out of recovery, and in my room they were allowed. They came up once as I really needed rest. They each walked a lap with me, and visited for maybe an hour or so.

Thank you. I sure hope they'll be able to visit me. I know that after I get out of surgery my support person (my husband) needs to bring me my things. They say to leave it in the car until I'm out of surgery. So I guess the surgery dept. is different from where i'll be recovering? sorry I'm all new to this.

My kids were able to visit me when I got my room. I have 4 ages 17, 11, 7 and 5. I know most of the time icu units restrict children. Were you able to get an answer?

My 2, 5 and 6 year old came in the evening to visit. I was so out of it I barely remember them coming and literally fell asleep during the 5-10 minutes they were there. No one said anything about them not being there. I would recommend your hubby get a sitter for the day of the surgery, the waiting area could be a nightmare for him with a little one!

In this case I was going to suggest he just drop me off at the hospital and leave, and that when I was finally out of surgery and up I would call him and have him bring me my things. It does suck I have to do this all alone but we can't get a baby sitter. We never had a baby sitter. My daughter has literally been stuck to my hip since she was born. We don't know anyone around here, it's a fairly new area to us. No friends and family here.

For those of you who have already been through this, do you think having him come back after the surgery would be fine? or should he wait until i'm out of surgery before leaving? It would be nice to have him there when I wake up but if it will be too hard for him to do with our daughter then going back home for a few/several hours might be a better option.

Yes mine were, well sorta it said ages 3+ and my little guy is 34 mos so I was worried, but no one asked even one question and what a nice treat it was to have them there! My advice is maybe not the first day if you have a late surgery. I was still heaving and actually didn't have a room until 930pm, so I'm glad we decided ahead to have them come the next night! My doc also said he could discharge me the next day but I opted to stay another night and I'm glad I did! Good luck, ism just about home, can't wait to be in familiar surroundings!

That depends on how content/occupied your 3 year old will be in the waiting room. You know your child. I would have him take her out for awhile and then return when you get to recovery. You can explain the situation and request that the hospital call him when you get to recovery. The hospital will want you to have your support when you are awake. It made a world of difference to have my husband there when I woke up. It was much later than I expected when I woke up in my room so I was freaking out thinking something went wrong. If you think your 3 year old can handle being there when you come out of recovery and the hospital will allow it, I say go for it. 3 out of my 4 kids would've have been ok at that age but my youngest would've been restless and outta control. lol. Talk to your surgeon and the hospital when you register and make a plan from there. Good luck, see on the losers bench!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
