Hi Lisa, We'll all be thinking about you and praying for you (and Dr. Choban and all your caregivers at Mt. Carmel). I'm sure everything will go fine. Keep us posted on how things go. I'm finally getting to mushies this week - woohoo! I found some recipes that sound decent - of course, after two weeks of full liquids, just about anything would sound good. I'll keep track of the real good ones and post them later or send them to you when you're ready. ~greg

Hi Everyone,

I haven't been able to check back to Seebs or any other responses regarding the lapband fills because I've been horribly sick with the flu for the past several days. :cursing:

Anyway, I read where a lot of you have mentioned that Melissa was doing your fills or that you were told that she would be doing your fills. Either way, I'm really surprised by this and a little concerned. When I had my first fill, it was at the hospital and yes, Melissa did it with Dr. Choban standing right next to me. However, she didn't get it on the first stick, so Dr. Choban took over right away. I have a lot of experience with ports, you see I have a morphine pump in my stomach due to chronic pain from a disease and I have it refilled each month. It has a port just like the lapband and only my pain doc is the one who refills it. He always gets it on the first try and he doesn't use any numbing medication. I don't like needles to begin with and I would be very upset if a nurse was poking around on me trying to find the port, let alone the doctor was not even in the room.

Several years ago, I had a horrible experience in preop where a nurse was trying to put an IV in me. By the time she and 3 other nurses had stuck me over 12 times up and down my arms, the surgeon came and rescued me by taking me to the operating room himself and he was able to put the IV in right away. Trust me, I don't want to go through that again and I don't think anyone else would either.

Don't get me wrong, I love Dr. Choban and we all know that she is extremely busy because she is such a good doctor. I don't think she ever expected to become so popular so fast. I guess that I will discuss the fill situation with her at my next visit. Thanks for your input and feedback.

Marie :tt1:

Palarin - Absolutely discuss your concerns with your doctor and let her know you want her to do your fill. She should understand given you have other experiences to back up your concerns. I definitely want them to do fills with fluroscopy until they have a good track record of hitting the port on the first try! All the best. K

Hey Sue, I'm still hangin in!! I can't wait to join you and the other cool kids with the band :tongue::ohmy:. I was busy last week and didn't get a chance to check in. I had 3 of my grandbabies (ages 2,3, & 5), so the only thing my computer saw was pbs kids.... I can still hear the Arthur theme song running through my head . DH and I were in your neck of the woods over the weekend. We went for a drive and ended up out that way (DH grew up in the Thornville/Mt. Perry area and has "step" family in your area).

Greg~ thanks for the heads up. I haven't received the 2nd packet yet....but today is 2 weeks exactly. I have been stalking the mail box though. I have heard so many great things about Dr. Choban and would love to have her as my surgeon, but I marked first available.

Lisa~ your in my thoughts and prayers today. Just think, you just joined the cool kids with the band today :crying:.

Hope everyone has a blessed day!!

Ok guys, I need some help. I thought I had this all figured out....guess not! Is the only difference between full liquids and mushies the types of food we can have? Do we still blenderize it to the consistency that it will go through a straw or what? I am so confused!

:eek:Hi all I am getting my first fill tomorrow at the hospital. I was told melissa would be doing it under floro and barium. I am ok with her doing it just hoping it will give me some restriction. I don't feel like I have much right now. although i am eating less, I haven't really lost anymore than my inital 14-16 lbs after surgery. I'm confident that Dr. Choban has trust in her staff that she has trained herself. I'll let you all know how it goes. i am just so ready to ghave the restriction i had right after surgery.

Definitely a difference in foods we can have ... plus, according to the sheet, it must be "pureed". On my blender, one of the buttons is "puree" so that makes it easy. I have read, however, on some LapBandTalk.com posts that you don't necessarily have to use the blender/food processor, as long as you get the consistency right (by manually mashing or mixing with a fork). But I'm as new at this as you are. I only know what I read. :) BTW, I tried a recipe for "Pretend Lasagna" that was good. Use 1/4 cup (low-fat or fat-free) ricotta cheese + a little spaghetti sauce + a little mozzarella cheese. Mix it up, microwave for 30 seconds or so - it's nice & mushy and tastes like lasagna ... well, almost!

Thanks Greg, I'm going to try the fake lasagna. I totally ruined my lovely egg this morning. I decided that it wasn't runny enough so I added Tomato Soup till I thought it could be sucked through a straw! I managed to eat about half of it but it was not the lovely taste I was looking forward to. I will try again tomorrow.

I feel like the money I paid for the nutrition classes was wasted, by the time I get into one I will be back on regular food.< /p>

I'm going to a class on Wednesday. I'll let you know if I learn anything that wasn't on the handout. btw, I think the handout said you can just mash a soft-cooked egg with a fork, so it doesn't need to be real runny. Try again tomorrow!

If this class is anything like the others, all she'll do is read from the handout. Not exactly a good instructional method. Hopefully, the next dietitian they hire (whenever that may be) will have a little more personality and better teaching methods.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
