That is so cool to know a little personal stuff about the surgeon. I had my first appointment with her (Choban) last week, and ofcoarse now I am starting to make all the appointments for the clearances. She was in,and out so fast. I am excited, but unfortunately my partner isn't as happy about the possibility of the surgery as I am... We are both overweight, but she is totally against the surgery. After reading the booklet they give you at the doctor's visit,my partner seems to think nobody ever reaches their ideal weight, and that I will go through the surgery, and ONLY lose about 66 pounds. I think a lot of it depends on how devoted you are to losing the weight; like making the good food choices, and commiting to excercising. And at this point 66 pounds would be awesome! I have a huge kidney stone that can't be lithrotripsied until my body mass is less, and being that much lighter on my feet when I work 13 and 14 hour days would be helpful too. I am a dialysis technician right now,but would love to go back to school to get my R.N. At this weight I do NOT have the stamina to do that, and work. It is hard enough to make the decision to have surgery, but even harder when your partner, wife, husband, whatever, doesn't support you. Anyone else in this situation? I know she is insecure, and thinks I will leave if I lose the weight, and who knows what will happen, but I HAVE to get healthier. Thank God my Mom,and sister are supportive. I keep trying to reassure her that I need this surgery to help me get healthy. This is the first year my bp has been high, and I have been lucky so far by not being diabetic. I feel that isn't far off if I don't do something now. So far I have three of my appointments made for the clearances, and am trying to remain positive. You all help me keep my chin up,and my hope for a normal sized body alive. Thanks!

Joyce

Hi all! I have been lurking on here for over a year now. Feel like I know some of you! I've jumped through all the hoops, finally got approved and am scheduled for Lapband Surgery on March 30th. Yesterday was preop day... today I'm beginning to realize it's almost here!! NOW I'm getting nervous. But I do want to thank all of you for, unknowingly, helping me through the past year. This is a great thread!!

Congratulations Karen! You'll be a Lucky Loser which I understand is the March 2009 nickname for those banded in March this year. I was a Shrinking Shamrock banded in March 2008! Its hard to believe a year has gone by.

I was banded in March 07. We are just the Marchies!

But that's okay too.

Funny that we've got March represented well, huh?

Sillypuddy

I sent you and PM.

But I'll put it out here too. Your SO is just worried for you because she loves you and is scared. Fear is a big deal.

I had a conversation with Nurse Niki and her husband before her surgery. He was scared to death about it. But he's on board now.

And look her up. She's back in school too. It's so much easier to wrestle all there is out of life when you are working toward your health goals. Happiness and confidence comes so much more easily.

Look me up if you want to chat one on one. I'm a gay too, btw, it the rainbowie ticker didn't clue you in.

Hey all glad to hear everyone is doing so well!! Kathy I wish I'd have known about the meeting woith Dr. Choban that would have been a good one. do you know when the next one is and what the topic is? I am feeling great and don't want to lose my momentum. I think it helps to get a "support boost" every now and again and I think I'm up for one. Keep up the good work everyone!!

Hi friends. I'm celebrating my 1 year bandiversary today with an Irish jig... happily dancing along with my lapband now. Best wishes to SueCasb and GregW who shared my surgery date with me and to NurseNiki who blazed the trail a week before us.

Hi Kathy,

Yup, it's been a great year, except I'm a little bummed right now. After what had been continual losses for the first 11 months, I've hit a wall. Seems like no matter how hard I try, I haven't lost any in the last 5 weeks. Coincidentally, that's when we got our gym membership and I've been working out 4-5 times a week. I keep telling myself that I'm gaining muscle (since I'm lifting weights), but it's still disappointing & frustrating not being able to lose. I told myself at the very beginning that if I lost 100 poinds I'd be happy, but now that I'm at 98, I want to keep going (another 10-20 more to go). Plus, I got "rejected" by the style show committee. Oh well, I guess I should be thankful for my successes so far. It has been an awesome year and I made some new friends in the process. :)

Kathy,

Congrats for making a year. Sorry I haven't been online for a while. My year will be April 2nd. I see that you have lost 93lbs, that is great. I have been stalled at around 40 lbs since November I don't know what to do. I started at the gym 4 weeks ago and have been going 4 or 5 times a week and just started back to walking at 5am since the weather has broken finally. I feel like I'm not eating enough but I can't eat anymore. I am going to start going to the nutrition meetings and see if they help me any. Sorry about rambling.

Again, great job.

I have 2 postings so look before and/or after where this link starts.

Congratulations Greg! I'm doing lots of exercise too and it does seem like I am building muscle for the short term but hang in there!

I was able to see Dr. Miller for a tiny fill of .25 cc's yesterday to bring me to 10.25 ccs in a 14 band. When I explained to him that my calorie count was climbing consistently above 1500 and that I wasn't staying satisfied long enough with a meal or snack portion, he agreed it was time for an adjustment but also said now that I am getting pretty full on my band, he will go very conservatively on each adjustment because he doesn't want to have to do an unfill. After having read where others got .5 cc and were in the E.R. the next day or two getting an unfill back out of that adjustment, I'm willing to go the conservative route.

So here is a real mental victory for me... I had a business lunch at a Japanese Steak House on the east side of Columbus just 3 hours after getting my band adjustment which puts me on liquids only for the day. So here I am ordering Hibachi chicken (yum) and watching everyone else eat their whole meal while I sipped on ice Water. I got a take home box for my whole lunch and just had to explain to the vendor who was buying lunch that I had a doctor appt and needed to be on liquids but that I'd enjoy the meal the following day. What I didn't tell them was that meal will probably make me about 3-4 meals! So will-power prevailed and knowing I can't risk eating on a band fill day kept me strong.

The scale is down this a.m. but I expected it would be after a day of liquids so now the gradual increase in food types will help me see if this adjustment did the trick on staying full and Portion Control.< /p>

Thanks for the advice LadyRoz! I am continuing to go to all the appointments for my clearances. Had my psych eval, and they didn't lock me up,so guess I am good there... LOL Had the appointment with the pulmonologist because of the asthma, and he said he doesn't see a problem with recommending me for surgery, although the pulmonology tests that were done after that appointment were HARD! Darn allergies have my asthma acting up! Hoping they turned out ok. Next wednesday I go for the sleep study;really don't know if I have sleep apnea or not-guess I will know soon. I know if that is the case, you have to be on the bipap machine six weeks before being a surgery candidate... NOOOO!!! I am making appointments as fast as I can to expedite the process. Have an appointment two weeks later to get the sleep study results... I have also been wondering about something that maybe you all could help me with. What if it isn't all hunger;what if you're an emotional eater? Will the lapband still help? I guess if you're full,it won't allow you to eat out of emotion because there is no room? So many thoughts swirling through my head!!:smile2: Then I read posts from you all-I can only dream of how my body would feel minus 60,80,90,118 pounds lighter!!! That is awesome!!! Keep up the good work everybody, and I will keep forging on!

Joyce

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

      2. Selina333

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

      2. Doughgurl

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
