Getting All Your Liquids In....how Do You Do It?

Recommended Posts

My surgery was one week ago today (on 11.12.13) and I have yet to get all my liquids in for one day - 64 ounces of Water and 4 Protein Drinks.

For those of you who are ahead of me on this journey, how long did it take to get to the point where you were consuming all that was required? Any advice to help increase intake?

How am I feeling? I have not thrown up at all, my incisions are healing great, I have a rash from being allergic to the steri-strips, I still have gas pains in my left shoulder, I don't feel like I've done 1000 sit-ups anymore (only 500 now!) and I am taking my Vitamins faithfully. I'm off diabetic medication completely and have had normal blood sugar numbers since coming home. I have really bad morning breath and feel like my mouth is coated in something. And I have lost 28 pounds as of this morning. 15 pounds from my two week pre-op and 13 since surgery.

Congratulations and good luck to everyone!

~Susan.

I am 5 weeks out and I have never, not one day, hit my Fluid intake goal. I am too full to drink that much. But I continue to reach for the goal.

have yet to get all my liquids in

.

Newbie (aka Susan ;) )

28 lbs!!! WooHoo!!!

do your best with getting in your Protein but liquids/drinking is more important for now

not getting in all your Water in at this early stage happens to some

best advice is to take slow, slow sips.

try room temperature Water, that seems to work for some

many people like chrystal light

popsicles are also good

water is ESSENTIAL

for the "rest of your life" you should/need to get in at least 64 oz of water a day

dehydration is no fun, you don't want to go their as others have

can't tell you when you will satisfy your liquid "quota"

the one thing we all have in common is that "we're all different"

some people have no trouble drinking plenty of water very quickly PO

others take one, two weeks or more - hope you are somewhere in between :)

sorry about the rash and little gas :(

both will gradually improve (know that doesn't help you any though  )

bad morning breath especially one week PO is common - suck it up

as with everything else, it will get better

glad to hear you are taking your Vitamins - gotta continue that forever too

tummy feeling sore like you have done 500 push ups

that will improve too!!!!

no more diabetes meds!!!! party dance, party dance

other health issues will gradually get better as time passes too

most of us experience bumps here and there

hold on, a great new life is waiting for you

you are on the road to a healthier, happier, longer life :)

continued healing, quick speedy recovery

good luck

Kathy

congrats

I'm a little over 3 months post op, and if I'm not on top of my Water, I don't get it all in.....The only food I bring to work is my lunch, so when my head hunger kicks in, mid morning I reach for my Water and sip sip sip----otherwise, I'd be grazing all day...about an hour before bed time, if I haven't reached my liquid quota, I take a water bottle and sip until I get it down (but I am further out than you are, I'm probably able to drink more)

What I didn't hear you say in your post was whether you were taking 'walks' or not. That plays a big part in post op recovery as you probably know.

Thanks for the information!

Yes, I forgot to mention that I walk every day. I've always been a walker and it feels good to get back at it!

I remember because you are from Michigan, too!

I hope you are doing well. I weigh every day. I always have so I didn't stop since I had surgery.

Take good care!

I was told you could count half of your Water intake as Protein Drinks. So that should make it easier for you.

Hehehe I think you're confusin me with someone else :) I'm from Canada :P

I used to weigh every day especially during my preop diet. But now I don't want to put that pressure on this early. Oddly enough, I'm not even really curious either >.<

Tee Hee! Okay, close enough....just across the bridge or through the tunnel :-)

I do it ( weight daily) just out of habit.

Take care.

I am almost 4 weeks out and fluids are tough! I still don't get it all in but it has become a lot easier in the last 5 days to drink larger sips and that has helped tremendously.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
