Calcium Citrate Chews Side Effects?

Recommended Posts

Hi all. I'm one month out from surgery and every now and then, I have stomach aches. It dawned on me that maybe I'm getting an upset stomach due to the calcium citrate chews I take? I got them from Bariatric Advantage and usually chew two at the same time (one after the other). Have any of you been bothered by stomach aches from these chews? I think I just realized I should take one in the morning and one in the evening with food. I'm just curious if this could be the cause of the stomach aches.

I was told to split the calcium chews, one 500mg in the morning and another one in the evening. Studies show that only 500mg Ca absorbs from the guts at a time. If you take 1000mg, appr 500mg leaves the body without being used.

Thanks for both responses. I'll start doing one in the morning and one in the evening to see if it stops the stomach aches. I am now recalling that the dietician probably did tell me to do the dosing like that but to me, they are like eating Starburst so I just did the two at the same time. It could also be the Iron in the chewable Multivitamin giving me stomach aches. I'll just have to try to figure out what it is and go from there. It is obviously one or the other. Thanks!

Is this something your doctor recommended ? I think I would make sure to discuss it on your next visit.

Yes, I was told to take 2 Calcium citrates daily and a multi. I think my problem is that I was taking them together. I'm going to try one in the morning and one at night to see if stomach aches go away. Hopefully, that is my issue.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
