Travel After Surgery?

Recommended Posts

Hi, I don't have a surgery date yet, and my surgeon told me no travel for 3 months after surgery (mainly because he wants me to be close to home until I'm thoroughly stable). Have any of you traveled, especially internationally, after surgery? What were your biggest challenges?

Did a 16 hour road trip about a month after. It was a long drive and the dr had us stop very 2 hours to reduce the chance of clots. I had premade Protein Shakes in a cooler, Water, and a few other Snacks I could tolerate. It wasn't easy but it was doable. International might be a tad more difficult.

Yeah, I'm a little worried about international, but I'm sure my doc can help me figure it out. I could certainly take a supply of Protein Bars, shake packets, Jerky. It's UK and France. But I guess first thing's first, right? I'm just anxious to get my surgery! But, I do want to start planning that trip, and I don't want to delay my surgery until after it. Sounds whiny, now that I read it! ;)

I travel for a living- I am 4 months post Lap Band ( down 61 pounds thank you very much :) I started traveling only 3 weeks post op- my doctor was fine with it. Make sure you stay hydrated when flying!!! Don't eat a big meal prior to or immediately after a long flight- stick to a light meal - yogurts, shakes, and plenty of water!!

You make have some incision pain due to the oh so comfortable position of the airplane seats- Take a pillow (a neck pillow can double as a belly pillow)

The scariest thing for me when traveling was eating out- Just pre plan every meal.

Always ask your Dr first- some Drs. have differing advice for their patients.

Good Luck and Safe Travels!!

Thanks! I haven't had my surgery yet, but I did talk to my doc about it. His biggest concern was for me to be close to home for 3 months. My biggest concern is eating in another country when I can't plan anything.

I haven't traveled internationally post-op, but we eat out often and I've found that I can usually find menu items that work now that I'm in the "soft food" stage. Things like scallops, Thai Larb, and fish have all worked for me (so far). For the first month post op I was on puréed food. I think it would be much harder to find foods that would work for that stage- although I did eat hummus which you might find fairly easily.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
