It's About Me & It's For Me

Recommended Posts

Hi I'm Millie Kay,

I'm set to be banded Dec 4th 2013. As I have discussed my decision with a chosen few people in my life I've received a variety of responses. The best explanation I have for the nay sayers and the haters is this is about Me and it's for Me. I've done my due diligence in research and I believe I'm ready. I'm glad this community is here for support, I'm going to need it. I start my pre-op diet tomorrow and the eye rolling has already began, lol. I'm not going to let it break my stride because It's Me that matters right now ;)

I understand what you mean I have told very few as well. So far only one of those I have told gave me a little grief but she does understand this is for me. I want to tell one of my younger sisters but her daughter is pregnant with first child so I think she has enough on her plate for now. My sister that is right behind me is going to stay at the hospital with me. She is my rock. My husband and youngest son want to do it but I am not feeling it. My stepmom her mom was there when we each had our last hospital stay but since she is in heaven now. We are each other's hospital buddy. I pray things go well for you. I am here if you need someone to talk to.

I understand! I did not hardly tell anyone i was having it done until two weeks after I had it. I didn't care what anyones thoughts were on it. Good or bad! I was doing it for me and thats the only opion I needed at the time. I had my surgery August of 2012. Best choice I have ever made for myself. Good luck with your surgery and your new adventure to being thinner! :D

Hi, Millie Kay! I'm scheduled to have lap band surgery on December 18th. I understand how you feel. So many people have strong opinions about WLS. What surprised me was some of the negativity from really overweight people. I too, have not told many people for this reason. It IS about you and not them. It makes me even more determined to be successful. I have a very supportive husband. Seek the company of those who will support you.

Hi there...best of luck to you!

I understand the confusion about telling or not. When I started this journey and right up to my surgery date only my terrific hubby and 3 friends knew. My immediate family knows now (and I told them AFTER the surgery)....and 2 people from work know...and they were super supportive!

You are so right...this is all about YOU...and no one else!

I think some people, for good reasons or not, just think we jump into this like its some fleeting thought, some easy decision. This is a last ditch effort to truly improve my life....and I AM SOOOO GLAD I MADE IT. It's been a great journey so far and I've learned and am learning to take it one day at a time....and one pound at a time too!

Keep us posted!

I too did not tell my friends and some family members about having my surgery. I did it to feel better about myself. I also felt like I would be judged since I have battled with my weight for years and did not want to hear their negative comments.. I chose the sleeve because I felt like it was a great tool to help me control my eating and it has been wonderful. I no longer take blood pressure meds! I have lost 61 #s and just feel great. Do this for yourself and don't worry about the naysayers! Go for it!

So far, only my husband, son and one very non judgmental and very supportive friend IRL know about my surgery. I will share with others down the line but for now, I am kind of enjoying playing it close to the vest. :)

I'm with you on not running my mouth to everyone about my decision. I've had my lapband for a few years now and I know a friend always watched what I put on my plate and commented if I took a small second helping at a picnic. My son & daughter-in-law were not 100% in favour of my having it placed and finally I told them to "zip it up!" I have never been sorry I have it and would not give mine up for anything.

The band is a gift to myself and a way of choosing myself first. After years of taking care of others and not putting myself first, I'm finally doing it. Yippee! Thanks for a great post, Millie Kay. It's good to know what you're up against. There may be people in your life who try to sabotage. Sometimes we fit into a box -- the fat one, the quiet one, the helpful one, etc. -- and when we change something people's worlds get rocked a little bit. People are defensive about their own health and addictions, the potential for losing an eating partner, etc. Take it easy on the pre-op diet -- be gentle with yourself if things come up to the surface remember you're doing this for YOU! I love that.

I wish I wouldn't have told anyone. I have struggled lately and feel like I am being judged for yet another failure. My advise, just saw thank you to those who notice your loss and that your working hard at it.

I have been thinking a lot lately about what I am going to say to curious people who ask about my weight loss. It is very unusual for me to be secretive about myself, I'm usually am open book. For some reason though, I want to do this journey privately. I might change my mind later. So, I came up with a great response I may use. I like it because it's the truth, so I'm not lying but it also doesn't invite further discussion. When someone asks me what I'm doing to lose the weight, I'm gonna say, "Restriction," or "I'm restricting what I eat." It will be true and most people will not get the implications. :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
