First Trip To Trader Joe's

Recommended Posts

I don't have a Trader Joe's that is close to home so my daughter and I took a day trip to Gainsville for my first trip to Trader Joe's. I couldn't believe all of the different cheese's to chose from. I bought a goat cheese log with cranberries and I can't wait to try it! I sampled the one with apple pie on it and it was divine! My daughter bought that one. I thought the store would be bigger than it was and they told me it was one of the bigger ones. It still had a lot of good stuff and I will go back again. Can anyone tell me some of the things they have tried that are really good and would work with lower carb choices?

I'm a big fan of TJ's candy (not so low carb, sorry). They sell a 1lb pkg of dark choc covered espresso Beans for $6, while Starbucks sells them by the oz for over $7.50 (and they're not as good). Also LUV the dark choc covered caramels.

They have yummy frozen stuffed mushrooms that were always a hit at our Sat nite poker game. And their fresh guacamole is yummy too. I went for years without having a local TJ's until they finally opened 1 a couple yrs ago near my house. I was a regular. Before then, I had to hit up my moms local one when I was visiting her. She's a fan of $2 Buck Chuck (which is now $2.49, not sure what they call it anymore?) (Charles Shaw brand wine). I'm not a fan, however. I'd rather drink a jug of cheapo Carlo Rossi.

Since moving to Ca from Or recently, I noticed out local TJ is much smaller than the newer one in Or. Maybe they're making the newer ones bigger? Their produce section in the Ca older 1 is about 1/2 the size.

I bought the TJ White Zinfandel and plan on trying that with my family for Thanksgiving. I also found some scallops and mushrooms that looked like they worth a try so I will have those this week.

Some of my favorite groceries from Trader Joe's:

--Steamed lentils (already cooked, just heat and eat, in refrigerated section) - I use these all the time, they have high Protein, great in salads or as a side.

--Teeny tiny potatoes - perfect size for us sleevers! In produce section.

--Thai Spicy Peanut salad dressing - a little goes a long way, divine w/ lentils!

--chicken Tika Masala, and pretty much ALL of their Indian foods are scrumptious

--Frozen garlic Naan

--Frozen Turkey meatballs - I eat these all the time! Heat up 2 meatballs in a covered dish w a little chicken broth to keep em moist.

--mini party-size meatballs - a bit higher in fat/calories than the turkey

--Fresh buffalo mozzarella sticks

--California Estate Olive Oil- cheap, good quality

--Nonfat Greek yogurt in Mango, blueberry, and pumpkin (when in season!)

--Unsweetened vanilla almond milk

--Thai noodle salad (many other fabulous salads in refrigerated section)

...seriously, I could go on and on and on! Love Trader Joe's!

Thanks! I saw some of those there and was afraid to buy them without someone else's opinion on them. I will give some of them a try! :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
