Sugar Addict

Recommended Posts

I had (and still have) this issue - I broke the addiction pre-op by cutting out all treats and switching to dark chocolate. I tried all sorts until I found a low-sugar type that was still slightly edible. :) It is kind of nasty but still felt like I had a treat so I wasn't too deprived. It took forever to break both my sugar addiction and my diet soda habit, but it is doable! Good luck!

For me the only way to cut the craving and additional hunger caused by sugar is to cut it completely out. It is like tobacco if you have ever smoked. Easy to start back up again unless you abstain completely.

Once it's cleared from your system the craving for it will subside. I am off sugar right now and while my body isn't asking for it, my mind still sort of wants it if that makes sense.

That being said it's VERY difficult to completely cut 100% sugar since many foods and Condiments contain sugar even though you wouldn't necessarily know it from the taste. ketchup, BBQ Sauce and Jarred Spaghetti sauces come to mind.

But cutting out all obvious sources of sugar still seems to work pretty well. You can also make homemade foods and sauces which makes it easy to control the content of course.

Sorry if this is a little bit rambly!

ETA: I found that I even had to cut out the 1/2 teaspoon of sugar from my morning coffee as well. I switched to Nectresse (or whatever it's called the one with monk fruit) and could feel the difference that same day!! Amazing....

I find that sugar is a problem for me too. I can say that it is a bit crazy. I have a problem with candies like whoppers and salt Water taffy. I seem to gravitate towards them and think about it all the time. I try hard not to but man it hard. I take it one day at a time.

I too use the Monk Fruit in all my drinks like tea and coffee.

I couldn't agree more. It's addiction. All or nothing. I'm an addict so for me if I slip up even once I'm screwed. For me, no soda..ever...no sweets.. ever... since I haven't had any in so long it's not that hard. I just have to have little arguments to myself every once in a while :)

Sugar is on of the most toxic chemical we can put in our body. I am a sugar addict and struggle with this all the time. I do have to read all labels for 5 different types of sugar. I even avoid food products with sugar alcohol in there. If I do eat something sweet, I crave more of it.....it's really dangerous for me. I find that if I stick to things like organic meats, spaghetti sauces that are organic no sugar listed I am ok. I realize that I can only eat organically grown foods that are not processed due to needing the nutrition value from that food. This is a choice that I have to make and I do fail at times and have to recoop my focus and start over........ :P

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
