Blood Sugar Readings

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

Its been 3 days since I left the hospital and I noticed by blood sugar readings fluctuating from normal 110 to 145 which is slightly high but I usually have a normal reading. I guess my body is fighting. Since I am instructed to not take my diabetic meds anymore. However I was instructed to call my doctor if I have a high reading of 200 twice or more. I guess this is normal but not sure I have a doctors appt this week so I will find out more. I would appreciate any comments or feedback on this. Thanks

I bounced around a bit post op. I actually needed insulin several times the first two days I was in the hospital. My numbers didn't stabilize until about a week to ten days post op.

By then, my body was used to the new diet, the immediate stress of surgery had worn off and my pain was gone. All of those things contribute to spikes here and there. I had the same experience as you.

Give it a few days and keep taking your readings. You might want to record them somewhere if your monitor doesn't store them long term. It was neat for me to look back and see how quickly they fell into the normal range and stayed there.

Good luck, and congrats on that new sleeve,

~Cheri

Stress is one of the contributing factors to elevated blood sugars. So with surgery you are definitely going through a lot of stress or lets say the body is. I've been a type II diabetic since 1995 and had gastric bypass. Before bypass, during the day, I could pretty much control my levels, come bedtime they would jump to over 200 upon waking. So had to go on Lantus along with regular insulin (quick acting). Well, my body is now calming down and I have gone from 125-150 units of insulin daily to less than 110 units in three days. Still not free but surgery has helped it. They say as I continue losing weight I should be coming off the insulin. I'm taking a wait and see attitude. Have only 36 lbs to go. (Also if I would excerise like I should I probably would even be using less insulin than what I am now, or probably none at all). :)

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
