Is It Just Me?

Recommended Posts

When I tell friends and family I am having Lap band surgery on the 25 the responses most of the time is "Why?" Or "You don't need to just diet and exercise." and my favorite "You know it is a life style change."

Is it just me or do other people get this to?

I definitely got this too. I'm getting the sleeve but when I mention it, I thought the responses would have been all positive but surprisingly enough, I was met with unexpected comments and reactions that almost made me lose "friends" until I gathered my emotions. I decided I'd be more selective in my sharing to not just close associates but real close friends and family only.

Not that they will agree with me but I'm more incline to take their feelings and thoughts a bit less harshly since I know they've considered my feelings already.

My stance on the haters is this... it's my body, not yours. I'm doing what I feel is necessary to get to a healthy weight to live MY life healthily. I often think of these opinionated people and wonder if they have health conditions ie: diabetes, high cholesterol, or any condition that they take meds for. How would they like someone telling them not to take their meds? Just avoid the fat and cholesterol based foods, and exercise more, etc... They would look at you like you're crazy. They need those meds for their health. Well, this is the same situation, they choose to take medications for their health, and we choose to use a medical device for our health problem. Best wishes to you, and don't let others two cents affect you :)

I think we've all gotten some of those same responses. My sister's first response was that her friend who got the band a few years ago, gained all her weight back; as if that was going to be a deterrent for me. I also got the "all you have to do" comments, but most of those people were also supportive of my decision.

I'm convinced that the folks that make these types of comments, have zero clue what this is all about. They don't understand the disease of obesity, nor do they understand that WLS is only a tool……not a cure. I've been very selective about whom I discuss this with, and I'm glad. I don't really care what anyone else thinks, but I don't have the time or energy to educate them.

Agree with the others. food addiction is so different from other addictions. Nicotine and illegal drugs one can live without, but food is all around us and is a must to survive. Many people do not understand this and I'd gander a guess that many of those folks are obese themselves.

Exactly!! Sometimes you'd be surprised to see that if they had the knowledge on the surgery and its benefits, the guts to face the risks and complications or the benefits to cover the surgery and aftercare, maybe they'd be right along with u on ur journey. U never know why someone says anything negative about something with only positive intent..go figure!!!

My chubby butt got up to 405 lbs so I didn't get push back about needing WLS.

I got push back because I went to Mexico to get my WLS.

Now that my VSG is helping me succeed and my Mexico experience was an amazing success my support system are 100% with me....

But man did the fur fly when I said I was going to Mx.

I'm getting that same thing AmandaRaeLeo. I'm glad to hear your Mexico was an amazing success. I am getting banded Nov 26th and having it done in Mx. I've done a lot of research for months and feel very confident about my decision. I will admit I am feeling a bit anxious as the date is right around the corner now but also so excited to become a healthier me.

Why in Mexico?

I am having it done in Mexico because insurance and my BMI is under 35 and currently I have no comorbidities. I have yo-yo dieted for years and can lose some weight but I tend to always gain back and then some. I honestly at one point didn't think I would be able to qualify it have it done because I thought their were even stricter requirements to qualify. Then I happened to stumble upon a conversation one day and found out that I could potential have the lap band procedure done and use t as a tool to lose Nd maintain before I run into health related issues as obesity, diabetes and high blood pressure all run in my family. As well as I will soon be 40 and dieting seems to get harder and harder the older I get. I just decided I want to make the choice to do this now and have the healthier lifestyle with the assistance of the band.

Juju,

People that get banded in Mexico usually go because their insurance does not cover it and it's a cheaper procedure there. (Probably cheaper ANYWHERE but here.)

And I second what everyone else said. Some people just don't get it when it comes to food addiction and being tired of yo-yo diets. If they don't get it and give you shit? Screw them! They don't need to be informed of your life decisions anyway :)

Thanks ErinMarie. Your exactly right. I don't have to let anyone know for I fear I wouldn't be supported. I have only told 2 people other than this forum and thank goodness because tho I want to keep my decision semi private in my personal life I feel I can get support on this forum as people don't know me or some may have experience that is similar to me. Everyone's feedback has been a positive impact on me and I'm very appreciative of that. Although I'm doing it alone I don't really feel that way thanks to many of you.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
