Hi

I'm assuming by your name you live in Mt Airy NC? Correct me if I'm wrong. I had my sleeve done in Feb in Charlotte and I'm a RN in Charlotte as well. I live in Concord. Where are you having your surgery?

I agree most of the bariatric patients that I have met have been RNs. So sad.....we need to do better about caring for ourselves. I am a Labor and Delivery Nurse and hate being heavier than my pregnant patients. No more.....I'm now 65# less than before! Size 14 to Size 2! Glad I did it!

I work L&D also and I know how you feel. My preggo ppl act so embarrassed to weigh 165.

Nurses are caretakers. Which is ironic, because we often forget to care for ourselves. Nurses also tend to lose their identities in their profession and family roles. Meaning that identifying as a nurse becomes part of who they are, not what they do.

Absolutely! I think so many people who become nurses do so because they can identify the caregiver in their own personality. I know I am a nurse all the time, not just during clinic hours....

I am a RN and had VSG too! But I was obese long before I became a nurse in 2003.... ! I agree there may be a correlation between caregivers and those they find comfort in food.

I am an RN too. I had my surgery done at another hospital from where I work because they don't do the sleeve. Only do bypass and lapband. I had this done to take back control of my life. I was overweight before I became a nurse but gained more over the years from 3 kids a divorce bankruptcy and life in general. 7 months out and down 115lbs. I only have about 12 more to go. I find if I take Protein Shakes and bars to work I can eat when it is busy. Has been off the hook the last month I am in L and D and babies have been coming out every where!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
