All I know is my surgeon won't even perform the band surgery anymore. She said the statistics show it does not work in the long term.

I was banded last year in feburary. I lost about 85lbs. It was complicated I was constantly being overfilled and I would throw up. After a few months I got acid reflux and it swelled my band completely shut twice. Finally in March of this year the whole band slipped and I gained 50 of my lbs back. I was sleeved 10/30 and I feel better except my acid reflux. I am against the band now

The band is what I was originally planning to get, but after doing research and talking to my surgeon I decided on the sleeve. My surgeon told me that for every band he puts in, he takes 4 out in order to revise to either a sleeve or gastric bypass because the patients did not have much success with the band.

I understand the appeal of the band. Originally it seemed less drastic to me. But as I researched further and became more aware of the serious complications that some have with the band the sleeve began to appeal to me more. I also saw many doctors no longer perform or recommend the band surgery. Also at some point the band has to come out. Then what? I don't know about your dieting history, but I could get it all together and lose weight for a while, but I could never get all the way to goal and then I could never keep the weight off. I had a problem that needed a PERMANENT solution. With the sleeve you are "one and done," but the band is a life time commitment to adjustments, fills and eventually replacement. Wishing you all the best as you continue your research and decide what is best for you. Good for you for making steps to lose weight and get healthier whichever you decide!

Thanks, I'm learning towards the sleeve. I have 3 months to decide, so this forum does help. Thanks!!

I think also when looking at the complication rate,

You will see people telling you that it is much lower with the band. Well these comments and studies only take into consideration the first weeks. The sleeve as with any major surgery comes with the risks of complications do to the operation itself..

But the band as time goes on, will be at risk for many band related complications. It is a foreign body, and yes you can remove it, but by that time the damage is done..

Do your research (here) but also look at unbiased information too, studies and such.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
