Pureed Food Ideas Needed!

Recommended Posts

Hi all! I start my pureed diet on Sunday and I'm in need of some ideas. Especially some ideas to get some Protein in because I'm finding it real tough now. I'd say I've been getting about 40g a day. Is this the same as "mushies" Iv been hearing about? Or is that like the soft foods, which is not for another two weeks for me. Thanks!

mushies and pureed are the same. tuna fish is high in Protein, so is chicken. you can use blenders to just about puree any foods. of course Protein drinks and mix with fat free milk for added Protein. just keep track of calories. some foods are very high in calories, fats and carbs. keep a log so you are getting min. of 60 or what your dr. has instructed. my mushy time it was 80 of protein and i haven't had a problem with losing hair. good luck. enjoy your food and choose variety over boredom

I got a magic bullet and you can puree anything. I did lots of egg salad, chicken salad (swanson makes a chicken in a can--size of a tuna can-its moist and tastes really good--i have it all the time), tuna salad (all of the above w/just light mayo), chili from wendys blended, even had homemade taco meat (ground in magic bullet). I loved the mushy phase...so great to eat and really taste food again. Hummus with crackers ( I was allowed saltine crackers i guess because they pretty much melt in your mouth).

Those are some ideas...I also roasted a chicken and just put it in the magic bullet...it was like a paste consistency and had mashed potatoes and gravy too. Remember, some of the pureed comes out looking yucky, just get past it and enjoy the taste.

Good luck, and since all docs are different be sure to follow your specific menu AND ENJOY....YOU WILL LOVE IT!

PS...not sure if my above would be your "mushies"...i was liquid for 2, mushies for 2 and then solids after surgery....best to you!

For full liquid stage my doctor told me whatever it is should be pourable -- if you put it on a plate and hold the plate up, the "food" should slide right off. So if you blend foods, just be sure to get them liquid enough by adding broth, milk, etc. I was told not to worry about Protein at this stage. Every one is different, however. Did your doctor indicate a particular protein goal for you? I have enjoyed yogurt, applesauce and boxed Soups -- potato leek, butternut squash, etc. Pacific and Imagine are two brands we have in our regular grocery stores here, in the natural foods section. Scrambled egg was on my list and one of the first days I made egg drop Soup. This weekend I'm making Indonesian a Squash Soup which is a blended soup the whole family loves. I use chicken stock so there's some protein there. Also I have a block of silken tofu I will do something with. Have been practicing letting a full minute pass between bites. Sure has slowed me down! Good luck to you and have fun!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
