Incision/surgery Performed In Gastric Bypass

Recommended Posts

Just curious: I know all of us here are having gastric bypass, but what type of surgery is it? Open, laparoscopic or robotic?

I'm having robotic gastric bypass on the 22nd! It's only been this past week that I have realized that I may be a little bit more apprehensive about the pain after surgery than I thought I would be. My surgeon has said that robotic gastric bypass cuts the pain and healing time by 50%. Anyone else having this particular surgery done?

I had laparoscopic GB with no complications, I was back to work in one week. The pain was minimal after about 3 days. I am a big baby when it comes to pain. I was on a morphine pump for the first 2.5 days then they took it away and I was OK with it. I moved around a lot, walked and rested when I needed to.

I never heard of robotic ?? what is the difference between laparoscopic and robotic?

You might find this study, http://www.sages.org/meetings/annual-meeting/abstracts-archive/robotic-gastric-bypass-the-future-of-bariatric-surgery/ , published by the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons of interest. In terms of safety and effectiveness, the results of laparoscopic vs. robotic surgeries are quite similar.

Thank you for the article, I will check it out.

Robotic surgery (as my surgeon has explained) is similar to laparoscopic. The main difference is the surgeon is actually about 5 feet away on a console (it looks like a video game system no joke!) and he is performing surgery that way. The robot has about 6 or 7 different arms. All are 360 degrees rotatable, smaller movements and smaller incisions. The system that he uses is the DaVinci SI. If you type in "DaVinci SI robot" on youtube, there is a 2 min video that gives you a briefing on what it is. It's pretty insane!

Hi i had robotic laproscopisc surgery to remove a 6 cm mass , this april 2013. It is interesting because surgeon is using a controller like we use for nintendo or playstation games. he does better than hands on surgery because he has a carmera with magnification(zoom). he sees more and can do same work with less cutting and invasive cutting to your muscles. which is less pain. gas after surgery is the only thing that may bother you. you will have 5 small really small insicions. mine were glued and healed relativly fast. i hope i was a help and if you need anything let me know. :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
