Gah! I Just Want Food!

Recommended Posts

9 days post op, down 26 lbs since starting Clear Liquids Oct 30th. Totally happy w/the sleeve and the weight loss... My surgeon has me on xclear liquids for FOUR weeks! All I can get down is MAYBE 2 sf Popsicles and MAYBE 1 sf Jello. Can't stomach broth...trying to find Protein that I can drink and I get my Vitamins. But holy crap I am salivating at EVERY food I see and dreaming about cheesy bread! I want me some real food! How are people doing thus successfully? How are you coping with the crazy mental hunger (granted some is actual hunger). Tips fellow Novembers?

Ahhh. I can tell you that for me the hardest part of this whole process was pre op... I wish I had some grand advice but really you just have to suck it up and do it! It will get easier. .. but not for a little while :( just think though. .. in a couple of months you'll be dozens of lbs lighter and able to eat most anything. .. hang in there, you CAN do this!!!

Neither dreaming nor thinking adds calories.

Eating does.

Fight the fat brain.

Yes, maybe you are taking too big of sips. Try to go even slower. Don't take a real drink.

No problem..also you can take up to 8 gas ex strips a day. Now if you can't get in 64 oz at first don't fret... Get 12 oz less than that. You can drink Decaf green tea mild. It calms and heals the tummy. Tepid. Don't force a gulp let it move across your mouth and slowly let it seep in. Also they told Meir you talk a lot you are putting air in your tummy. I am nose breathing too. When you need to burp, do so gently.. Don't force it.. Ok?

That is good info! my burps are tragically painful...I try not to burp hard but they come in like 4s and 5s! Def not as bad as Tuesday or wed but still hurts. I guess now that I think of it I am trying to force the Water a little too much....i'm just trying not to get dehydrated! I will def try the green tea! Again...thanks alot!

Thanks guys :) It's the whole forbidden fruit thing except it's worse because you KNOW it's delish! Made the mistake of trying to eat something today.... spent 5 minutes in the bathroom throwing up. Learned my lesson... NOT worth it. Throwing up now is AWFUL (not that it didn't suck before)

Okay I am one week out and having so many emotions. Plus I have picked up a cold. I am trying to sleep 8-9 hrs a night getting my fluids in, Proteins. I guess I am just scared I read so many people that hurt all the time when they eat. I cried a lot last it and today have been down. I keep telling myself its only been one week. I have no problems with drinking..gas is no more.. I guess I am just worrying when I read about all this throwing up.

I threw up because I was trying to eat when I shouldn't have been. Follow your surgeon's directions and you'll be good. Also I need to add that I have a VERY finicky stomach. I get sick on rollercoaster, in the car, on airplanes, when pregnant (the whole 9 months) I think people can be predisposed to have the throwing up as part of their recovery, not necessarily all but I'm sure I was. I hurt when I eat or drink still but I firmly believe that as my stomach has time to heal properly it will be as if I never had the surgery (minus huge portions). I ate that food because I was feeling crappy, I was hungry or nauseous all the time and just wanted something to make my stomach feel better (which food used to do). Obviously it had the opposite effect. Yesterday I finally figured out a way to get my Protein in and I feel WAY better, I'm not STARVING all the time. For the first 13 days I literally lived on 15-40 calories a day if that. I don't know how far out you have to go to get to Protein, my doc had me start at 8 days (couldn't get it down). Things will get better. I'm glad that thus far you are feeling so well! I think that's a positive sign your sleeved future!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
