Truth About Popcorn...

Why does it say to not eat popcorn for at least 6 months? Is there a specific reason such as it can hurt your sleeve? Or is it to simply make sure you are in a good "dieting" state of mind so you do not slip back into bad habits?

Im guessing you could get one of those little wispy kernal sheaths (the ones that get stuck in your gums) stuck in the stapled area?

I think it also constipates some people.

It "could" get stuck, true... early on...

It might not be a good diet staple...

seems like little nutrition there, and can you stop with one cup of popcorn... unbuttered popcorn, by the way? The devil's in the details.

I will say that my husband and I split a 100 calorie bag once or twice a week with no ill effects. I eat it one kernel at a time and at 3 months out, it still goes thunk. But we do have to exercise Portion Control with it, just the same as with many other foods that are not typically sliders, such as ground beef. We can eat a lot more than 4 oz of ground beef with a little liquid, say in chili or something. So just as we measure out our chili, we ration our popcorn.< /p>

We never make more than one 100 calorie bag for the two of us to share, we never use more than 1 pat of butter for the top--and then we proceed to enjoy the heck out of it. We waited a few months before having it, to allow the sleeve time to heal.

I wasn't eating much of anything for the 1st few months, but somewhere around 6 months I tried some popcorn and had no troubles with it. And it easily filled me up. 1 of the Orville Riddenbocker single serving bags was 2 meals for me. Now at 11 months, I can eat a whole bag. It's not a slider food for me.

I believe the reasons to stay away from popcorn during the 1st few months is:

1. It is possible to get pieces of the kernal in your stomach's staple line.

2. It has very little nutrition and you need to get as much nutrition in every bite you can.

My husband sprays a little cooking spray (like Pam) on top of his air popped popcorn and it tastes like movie theater popcorn and is low calorie. I'm just 11 days post op and skipped the movies this past weekend because I knew the smell of the popcorn would be overwhelming for me....I am craving some crunch in this purée stage!

A slider food just slides right through your stomach and doesn't give you that full feeling like dense Protein does. So you get the calories, but since it doesn't fill you up, you can just keep eating more and more.

I tried popcorn at about 3.5 months. I was amazed how much I could eat without feeling full. Wish I had never tried it. Now it's really the only thing I have a problem with. I can't stop eating it if I buy some. So I tend to save popcorn for when I really need to crunch something, measure it out, log into my MFP diary and throw out a lot of it (if it is in my house, it starts to talk to me).

Slider food, you can eat more & more & more and MORE... We all have some... chips, Cookies, junk.

Also, being salty, you'll want to drink right after and you'll flush it through.

popcorn smell is a real trigger for me. I have to run run far away.

I have popcorn, without issue. I didn't have this surgery to deny myself everything that tastes good, or that makes me happy. When we go to the movies, I ask for a child size cup, scoop some popcorn into that cup and that's what I eat. My family still gets a medium, and the two of them split what is left over. I don't add a ton of salt, but I do add a small amount of "butter". At home I sprinkle a little bit of parm, or tajin on it. http://www.tajin.com/en-us/ The best way to describe tajin is lime, chili, sugar and a bit of salt. I also use it on mango, pineapple, and papaya. It helps give popcorn flavor without adding a ton of oil. And if it isn't sticking to the popcorn a drizzle of lime juice and then the seasoning is amazing.

popcorn is a super slider food for me. It seems I could eat it nonstop and that's how I define a slider food. Anything you can eat a lot of.

      Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
      What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
