Hernia Surgery

Recommended Posts

I'm almost 6 months out and I've been plagued with nausea, constipation/impaction, and vomiting for the last 6 weeks. My doctor was hoping to hold off on the hernia surgery until I was a year out, but my flare ups were occurring more often. I had a bad night last Thursday and it started again this Tuesday. The umbillical hernia looked larger and was bulging more, so I headed to the ER.

They did the scan and saw that the bulge was mostly fat, but some bowel was also involved. Had surgery yesterday. It was mostly laparoscopic, but I do have one larger incision. Also have another dreaded drain. Came home last night and feeling pretty good. Pain meds can wear off without me noticing a whole lot. Hoping this solves my problems.

Just wanted to share in case anyone else is facing this. The surgery, at least so far, hasn't been too bad, other than seeing the scale go up 10 because of the IV fluids!! Really wanting to enjoy the 73 lb. weight loss do far. Hope this does it for me.

My surgeon told me I have a hiatal hernia and she will repair it when she does my RnY. I wish I had asked her what a hiatal hernia is . . and I will at my pre=op appointment.

I have not yet been approved for surgery. I will be. I have done all the things. It just takes a few days to get all the paperwork reviewed. Soon I'll see my surgeon and can ask 'what is a hiatal hernia?" I have googled it but I am still not clear.

Sounds like your hernia was a little different. I am glad they fixed it and hope you feel better now that the repair has been done. Blessings.

Mine was an umbilical hernia. A hernia is a hole in your abdominal wall that fat and tissue can protrude through. I had a hernia repair during my RNY surgery, but it obviously didn't hold. I was told that my doctor probably didn't use mesh originally. The physician's assistant explained that they don't like to use mesh during a RNY surgery due to increased risk of infection. I am far from an expert, but this is my understanding. I can say that I have 5 incision sites from the hernia repair, which includes a drain site. All are small except the incision right below my belly button. That one is about 2 inches. I came home within a few hours if this surgery. They said most hernia repair is done outpatient. Good luck to you.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
