Doctor Feels Restriction But, I Dont

Recommended Posts

I sure hope he doesn't tell me this is all the fills I'm going to get. I've lost 12 pounds since surgery and I'm starving.

Who is your doc? Mine is Frank Chae at Skyridge Highlands Ranch?

Dr. Brown at St Luke's. I really like him, he reminds me of Ron Swanson from Parks and Recreation.

My last fill a week ago was under flouroscopy & she described the appearance as a 'Coffee Stirrer' and they prefer it be a little looser to be more of a 'Milk shake Straw' instead.

When i go back in a week i plan to bring a doughnut with me to show her if its REALLY as small as a coffee stirrer why am i still able to get bread down.

My appt is in the morning so it may not go down as well, but definitely during lunch and especially dinner its like i have no band at all.

Im 8cc's in a 10cc band by the way...

Its comfortable but comfortable im afraid will not move my scale!

Each person and their doctor will have a different approach. Heres what my restriction looked like at a recent fluoro checkup. This would have been before consuming anything except coffee for the day. And this level provides good restriction FOR ME.video-2013-07-09-10-24-32.wmv

Oh wow! This is smaller than a 'coffee stirrer' straw, how many cc's does your band hold & what cc are u filled too?

Im almost sure ur not able to tolerate bread nor starches for that matter, correct?

Not sure how it compares to a coffee stirrer or straw, but its pretty small. I have a 14cc band with 9.0 cc's in it. I CAN eat almost anything if I wanted to. I don't eat hardly any bread or very much "slab" type red meat. I've mentioned here before, most people wouldn't even know I had a band watching me eat now....it's second nature, 99% of the time.

I occasionally will have an issue due to not chewing correctly still 4 years post op. But thats my reminder....and I like it that way. I never, ever, ever have reflux or heartburn. Haven't taken the first TUMS, etc since banding....not one.

I feel the important thing to remember is that its not really the NUMBER of cc's of Fluid in your band. Its all about how it works for you. Does it control your portions and hunger? Thats what my band does now.

You could have a lot of Fluid in your band system, yet feel NO restriction. I'm a big advocate of getting fills done using fluoroscopy....just from my experience.

my dr is fill stingy. Because I had a loss every month he never suggested I needed a fill.... But after a few months I KNEW when I needed one.... And while he never stopped questioning me if I really needed one or not he knew I usually was my best judge. A few times he talked me out if them and I have to say he was right. So then after that when I asked...he obliged. I had 6 the first year because as you lose the band gets loose so it needs to be filled. I never went over 5ccs in my band and my last fill was 14 months ago.

On a lighter note.. When you said your doctor was feeling restriction but you weren't , my thought was "stop squeezing him!" Lol...

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
