5 Month Update! Loving Life! Pics!

Recommended Posts

I am 4 days shy of 5 months post-op from my RNY. I have NO REGRETS (except not doing it sooner!). My highest weight was 217 with a BMI of 38/39. I have lost 62lbs from my highest weight and 53lbs from my surgery day weight. I am loving life. I feel good and look good!! 7 wks after surgery, my triglycerides (fat in your blood, similar to cholesterol) were normal, and my fasting blood sugar was normal. My labs were perfect!

I can eat almost anything as long as I don't eat too fast and too much. Now sweet stuff...I can have a bite or two. Like this Halloween, hard to stay away from the candy, but I could have a fun size candy bar and be fine. If I had 2 in a row (I did once), not good. My dumping is a rapid heart rate and feeling a little breathless and anxious and nausea. chicken is a little more difficult because it is not as moist as other food, but I made a chicken in the crockpot recently and with gravy, I could have 4 oz of that. Yummy.

I don't have much in the way of hanging skin issues except between my upper thighs, no so pretty, but oh well. It doesn't bother me a bunch and I will try to save to have a "leg lift" eventually. I still have my boobs and they aren't sagging too much more than they were before, lol. I'm still a D-cup although before surgery I really should have been a DD but I was in denial :). My stomach isn't so bad but I had a Tummy Tuck already in 2007 so I think that has helped. I tried to upload some pics but I don't have good before and after pics because I hated my pic being taken and I haven't taken an "official" after pic yet. The after pic was on Oct. 27th. My surgeon thinks I will loose another 20-30lbs, but if I don't, I wouldn't care. I'm very happy with me right now. I was a size 18 and now I am a size 10!

You look great! I also think it is neat that at only 5 months out you are already satisfied with your results because most people are not. Good luck with the rest of your journey!

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
