Attention Ladies Who Took Birth Control Pills

Recommended Posts

Took BCP for many many years before surgery. My surgeon required I stop them 2 weeks pre-op. After surgery I decided to stay off them in fear of gaining weight once starting again. I'm 9 weeks out & am still off them. My OB/GYN told me it was totally up to me if I wanted to get back on them. My main question is to any ladies who were on them & continued them post op...did u notice it hindered your weight loss or helped? I kinda miss the regularity of periods & no cramps but I don't want to stall (again!) thanks!!!!

I took mine with no interruptions at all (Quasense, a generic Seasonale) and have not noticed anything I would call a hindrance. The pill however, still didn't prevent my period from trying to creep up early on me though... at least I had read here enough to know that was a "thing" and didn't panic. HTH.

I am on depo went off 2 months before surgery as surgeon required 30 days off. Went back on at 6 weeks post op and have had no issues in my weight loss as far as I'm concerned.

I take Lo Loestrin Fe and I stopped one week prior to surgery and started back a week or two after surgery. No hinder to my weight loss at all. I also wouldn't say it helped it. I only had one stall at around 5 months and it was my own fault, not BC, but after that it was smooth sailing and the pounds have melted off.

I'm on Yaz & have been for 2-3 years. I never stopped taking it. They just gave me heparin in the hospital. It definitely had zero affect on my WL. I lost 65# in my 1st 4 months. I did have some breakthrough bleeding months 5-8, but it was minor.

I used to have horrible periods. Gone for 6 months then it would come on and stay for 6+ weeks and that pill was the only one that would stop it.

Do all doctors require you to stop BC prior to the surgery? I'm havering the sleeve Feb. 4th and haven't done my preppy appointment yet. I had lapband (I'm having it removed) 2 years ago and didn't have to stop for that. Just wondering.... I have horrible issues if I'm not on BC. Nonstop bleeding for weeks and once it lasted almost 2 months. Not fun!

It will sure hurt your weight loss if you get pregnant this early out. Lots of women get really fertile really quickly after surgery.

Edit: posted that before I saw the reply from Jerzy. Wow. I hope your surgeon and other doctors are guiding you through it. That would be so stressful! I was not trying to make light of your situation.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
