Help! Peanut Butter Is The Devil!

Recommended Posts

Okay, I've always loved Jif Peanut Butter. After lapband surgery on 09/19/13, when I finally starting introducing soft and reg foods after the 2 week liquid and 1 week mushie, I would come home from work and eat my 4oz for supper and then find myself feeling hungry an hour or so afterwards. I know this is probably more habit then hunger at night, as I would eat a few times after supper. I tried some greek plain yogurt and added 2 T of PB along with 3 or 4 splenda's with a sprinkle of cinnamon and a tsp of vanilla and I was hooked!

Now, instead of coming home and eating the meals I prepared for the week, I eat this yogurt/pb instead because I did not want to overdo it with both, and the yogurt has 15-20 grams of Protein and the pb has 7.. But then lately I've been getting more than 2 T PB and even go back later for more PB or another round before going to bed. Tonight I stopped by the store and got another jar along with sunflower seeds hoping it would help me feel more satisfied. Damn Comfort Food!!

When I do eat this, I find some discomfort with the PB as I feel it is sticking, but I continue to eat it because it is soooo good!

Has anyone else had a similar problem? Any suggestions on how to get away from this (nightly snacking) would be more than welcome. I need a swift kick in the butt!!! I've lost 32 lbs as of my last dr visit on 10/31/13 and am due form my 2nd fill Nov 21st. I'm afraid I may start putting weight back on.

Try PB2! It's powdered Peanut Butter and has so much less fat and calories than regular PB.

I'm a night snacker, too. I literally don't keep anything in the house (easy for me I don't have a hub and/or family to feed). Also, I started working out later at night after dinner so I don't even give myself time to snack.

You could try the Jif To Go Reduced Fat cups to help with Portion Control. The PB2 is great too!

I like to add PB to my morning smoothie....goes good with chocolate and a 1/2 banana...

I have many shake recipes and PB plays a big part in many of them....

Go through a lot of PB in our house...good Protein when added with 100% whey....

I LOVE PB2. I can't seem to find it in stores around here so I order mine on Amazon. It's perfect in plain greek yogurt. 1 spoonful does it.

Sounds like Peanut Butter is a trigger food for you. I like to remember that peanut butter is ok in moderation, but sometimes I have to ban it from my life to get control. You could try eatting your dinner and then brushing your teeth to confirm for yourself eating is done for the day. Another option is plan the peanut butter into your day so you don't feel guilty about it. :) (typed as I gaze upon my peanut butter jar)

If you can't control it, eliminate it. It's tough, but you can do it. If you are unwilling to do that, try an old trick I learned from WWs.

Measure out a teaspoonful into a microwave proof bowl, add 1/2 teaspoon of Water, stir and heat. It will be thin but still full flavor. It will spread well or make a great dip. (I don't know what banders can eat, but I like apples with no skin.) This should eliminate the stuck feeling, too!

Twice the pb, half the fat and calories.

Oye, this is my husband to a T. He is also banded and loves PB. Tries to justify it as a Protein snack. But not when it becomes a daily go to food. I told him no more PB and he's losing weight again. Normally I say moderation, but if you got butter on the brain, it's time to keep it on the grocery shelf where it belongs hahaha

PS ROLL TIDE, SO happy we beat LSU

I would think you could find a better Protein then PB. Have you tried eating more Protein at dinner? I know Peanut Butter has protein in it but the fat content is too much. I would say make a Protein shake without the PB and have that instead or buy Protein Bars for night time.

I eat sunflower seed butter. More Protein, less carbs, tastes even better than Peanut Butter (and I love the stuff too)

I'm with you on Peanut Butter being the devil -- got a good laugh out of that title. Time for an exorcism -- get it out of the house! If you find yourself wanting to buy another jar try to remind yourself that you want to be thin and healthy even more than you want peanut butter. And that's a LOT. I know, I know, this isn't a diet -- we are supposed to be able to have everything in small amounts, etc. But crack is crack, especially to a recovering addict. Signed, your fellow peanut butter worshiper

Peanutbutter was a weakness of mine when I was on puree foods. I had to limit myself to 2 tablespoons/day or I'd eat the whole jar.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
