Losing My Way...

Recommended Posts

Gawsh, I really feel like I'm losing my way. I am on the soft foods stage but I absolutely hate eating and I get no joy from it! I don't have any pain or complications from the surgery (sd:10/10/13) and I'm happy about that but golly I hate eating the same things over and over and I'm scared to eat many different things due to the possibility of a gain or a stall. I know for a fact that I'm not eating enough and this frustrates the heck outta me. How did you shake the "if I can't eat what I want I'd rather not eat all" blues?

It IS kinda like torture sometimes but I try looking at the big picture...I can't eat what I want to eat because I chose to have this surgery and change my old eating habits so I would lose weight. I still want the things that my husband eats and every time I'm tempted I remind myself that I didn't go through this surgery just to go back to the way I was. (sometimes that helps!) As for the "I'd rather not eat blues", If I don't get enough calories I don't lose any weight so I try to choose healthy foods (most of the time) with good calorie & Protein counts in them. Hope this helps!

At this stage, what you are experiencing is pretty normal. I can remember thinking what a chore eating was! Now, at 11 months out, I can eat anything and everything, and I can enjoy it. Now I have to really watch what I eat, and kind of miss the days when I couldn't eat more than a few bites. Just make sure to get your Protein and fluids in, and you will gradually be able to take in more.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
