Well all my surgery was 10/29 and I ended up back in the hospital on Sunday at 2am with a 104 fever. I have a leak at the bottom of my esphogus where it meets the top of my new stomach. I was operated on again to fix the leak with no success recovering in ICU with more 104 fevers surrounded with ice packs. The only thing the procedure did was maintain the leak in some extra fat they moved around it. GI doc then came in and went down my throat to clip the leak from the inside and place a feeding tube to bypass my throat and stomach to allow it to heal. Today is day 9 in the hospital. Working on tolerating the feeding. Goal is 55ml per hour. I am at 40, so almost there. This has been a struggle and the risks are REAL. If you are thinking about thus surgery be sure you are ready to handle any complications that come up. I will be going home with the feeding tube for 3 weeks along with a picc line that more drugs will be given through and blood samples taken out. I'm learning how to keep the lines flushed. A nurse from out patient svcs will be coming to ny home. I will let you know when I get home. ..hopefully tomorrow...Please pray I do. Or could be Thursday. I'm sick of this hospital but know this will pass and be a memory. I'm focused on losing the weight but damn did I have to go through this? ! God Bless

Amazed where I am today. When I had the complications I thought I was really doomed. I have no regrets and thankful where I am at today. In 10 months I lost 140 lbs. I'm doing yoga now and have tons of energy. Not on any medications and so looking forward to doing more with my life. The pictures don't lie. Don't ever give up, no matter what is thrown your way. It's not how you endured the storm but how you danced in the rain!!!

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
