Day 15 Post Op - Status And A Few Questions

Recommended Posts

I'm doing rather well. I had a hiatal hernia repair during the sleeve surgery. My left side hurts still, but not as bad as day 2 unless I cough. Coughing makes me feel like someone is hitting my ribs with a baseball bat. The gas is pretty much gone. My surgeon allows me to eat soft foods, but she said to make sure that I get the Water and Protein in by the end of the day. I weighed 262 the day of surgery and today I weigh 247. I have enough energy until about 6 to 7 at night. I start getting super tired by then. I'm rather happy right now.

I do have a few questions:

1 - Everyone says to walk, walk, walk. How much are we talking? 15 minutes several times a day? 3 miles a day?

2 - Anyone who had the hiatal hernia repair with the sleeve, did you find that you were still hurting a little on the left side after 15 days?

3 - I feel my weight loss is slow. Does it seems that way?

4 - How long did you wait to go to the gym?

Congratulations! Listen, I heard all sorts of things about how much to walk, but really there will be plenty of walking and working out up the road for you when you are feeling better. Listen to your body. I had to have my gastric band port "excavated" and was trying, but had abdominal pain for quite awhile. The doc laughed at my 2 week visit and said he did not really expect me to be exercising, or losing much weight until a month out. Use your pain medication, splint when you cough (hold a small pillow against the area). Your weight loss is amazing! Everyone here is so eager to have their weight plunge, but really, you have to heal first, and some bodies hang on to weight in healing mode. If you are tired by 6-7pm, it's a sign that you need rest. And isn't it a full time job to get all that Water, Protein, supplements in?

I was sleeved October 7th, so I am five weeks out. I am down 50 pounds, and I also had the hernia repair. With or without the hernia repair some people get pain and/or discomfort on their left side. Remember there was a lot of air inside you when they operated, and your liver was also moved around and flipped and flopped. The pain on that side turned into just discomfort around week two and lasted till about week three. I was cleared for the gym and exercise week four. You want to exercise an hour a day, even of its 15 mins four times a day, which could include walking. As for the energy level, make sure your getting in your Protein and the multi Vitamin as well as the B12. I use the dissolve able sublingual cherry b12's. Your doing great, keep it up!!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
