Mayo Clinic Rochester, Mn

Recommended Posts

I am going to have my surgery done at the mayo Clinic although it is 5 hours from home and there are other places in the state closer to home I decided I wanted it done at the best hospital in the country. It is a super long process, according to the paperwork I was given at my first appointment. It says I have to complete a 12 week behavioral modification program, which is perfectly fine with me. I want to be assured I can do this as well. But, once that is done and I meet with the surgeon they then get insurance approval, which they say can take 4 - 8 weeks. I can't really imagine that, but then they say once they have the approval the surgery won't be scheduled for another 2 - 4 months. Has anyone gone through this at the Mayo and had it really take this long? I was hoping for early February as I get super busy at work in April then. I want to be recovered by then and want to have a great summer being able to get outside and be and feel energized and active.

I didn't have my surgery at mayo but both my surgeon and the hospital are Centers of Excellence and the timeline was pretty much as you have described. Specifically, my first meeting with my surgeon was on May 10, 2011 and the surgery was Oct 20, 2011. I don't think there is one person on this forum that can't relate to your desire to get it done and get on with your life. But there are a lot of players - insurance company, testing, surgeon's schedule, hospital OR schedule - the list goes on and on. Try to be patient and stay positive - you're gonna love the new you!!

I'm also traveling to mayo Clinic in Rochester to have Dr. Todd Kellogg perform my Roux-en-Y. I was told 4-8 weeks for a insurance approval, but it was approved in 3 days, now I'm just waiting to have a surgery date scheduled. Hopefully, that when I return on 1/23 for a barium swallow image (yuck) they will pick a date.

Fingers crossed!! :P

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Had a sleeve in 2017, lost over 100 pounds. Had a DS surgery this year (2025) for more sustainable weight loss. 🤞

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
