Pre Op Protein Drinks

Recommended Posts

Could someone spell out for me what the Protein Drinks that are allowed in pre op liquid diet are? I am imaging them as clear liquid but are any flavored? Is Fiber bad? I assume this isn't the time for Protein Shakes such as chocolate flavored from GNC? Is that afterwards you are all talking about with the bars and such? I want to do this correctly, I have started on medifast 70 days out from surgery, I didn't want to wait until the last minute.

I believe that everyone has a totally different pre-op diet. For myself, the only thing I've been told NOT to do is drink my nutrition, ie: NO Protein drinks. I have a low carb high Protein diet for one week before surgery. And I start pureed foods while still in the hospital.

I did all liquids for 7 days pre op and was encouraged to drink 70g of pro per day. I used New whey Protein bullets. They are 3.8oz but don't even think about taking them straight. They are strong but work well when diluted in a Water bottle about 16-24 oz. These are also helpful post op when you are trying to get in your Protein on a clear liquid diet. Isopure Protein powder also has 27g pro per scoop and comes in flavors or unflavored. I use the unflavored and mix it in with low carb shakes like Adkins or EAS. You can pretty much get all your pro in those 2 servings alone. This is important if you are doing liquids pre op so that you have more strength and energy post op when you will need it the most. It is true that all the pre op diets are different depending on your doctor so certainly check with them to get a list of exactly what they are wanting you to take in. Be cautious with early dieting as it can weaken your body's immune system and if you get sick your surgery could be delayed.

I was on a 2 week low fat/liquid diet. I had a chocolate Mussel Milk shake for Breakfast and one for lunch. There were a ton of Protein Shakes listed in the manual as was the one that I selected. I got them because they were Walmart so that's what I went with. Of course I slugged down tons of Water to get my daily 64 oz. of fluids. There's more to what I got but just wanted to address the chocolate 'thing'.

My doc said I could drink anything that was high protein/low carb. (less than 5 carbs per serving)

I stuck to the EAS carb control chocolate shakes at Wal-Mart. 4/$5. Later I found Premier Protein chocolate shakes and switched to them. Both were low carb and good tasting, but Premier had a much more silky texture - more like chocolate milk.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
