What's The Deal With Caffeine Post Op?

Recommended Posts

I see people post op posting that they're drinking Decaf everything. .Is it because it's dangerous? Will it do damage to a newly sleeved stomach? What's the deal? I'm drinking decaf tea but I'm missing my coffee. .decaf coffee I cannot do. .blech. .

Everyone has an opinion on this topic, just do a search on caffeine :P

Here is my summary for what it is worth:

  • Many avoid caffeine but a number don't
  • People who avoid caffeine generally do so because their doctor or nut said no
  • Caffeine dehydrates you (already a risk with the sleeve, especially early on)
  • Caffeine can stimulate appetite
  • coffee in general stimulates acid, already a problem for sleevers
  • People do ignore their doctor's advice (or their doctor did not prohibit it) and keep their coffee habit
  • Many on here believe that our doctor knows best and we trusted them to remove 85% of our stomach so why question something as small as a caffeine restriction
  • Many others on here routinely do not follow their plan
  • It's up to you to decide, but I encourage you to stick to your doctor's plan

Good luck however you decide.

PS I generally avoid caffeine now, however, once in a blue moon I'll have real coffee and what a kick since I'm not used to it any more.

There are two doctors at the clinic where I go. One puts her patients on no caffeine and mine thinks having it is okay. Again, different strokes for different folks.

My doctor's and NUT's main objection to caffeine is that it dehydrates you. IMO as long as you are staying well hydrated then caffeine shouldn't be an issue. I am 2 and a half weeks post op. I had coffee once so far. I struggled that day and the next to stay hydrated.

I didn't try caffine again until several months post-op - mainly because I wasn't able to eat or drink much of anything for that long. But at 11 months, I can drink (3 to 4) 8oz cups a day at work with no ill effects. I didn't start out drinking like that, my first cup, I took a sip, waited a few minutes, took a 2nd sip, still no problems - then I knew I could handle caffine again.

I cut to 1/2 and 1/2 Decaf to all decaf before surgery.

Then nothing for 2 weeks before & after

Then back to caf/decaf mix.

I make sure I get a lot of Water in and...

it's the only drug I got left.

Oh boy.... my doctor wants me to cut down on caffeine and kick it completely before surgery. I am going to have issues with kicking caffeine competely! I tried giving it up both times when I was pregnant and would get horrible headaches so I would just have a small 8 oz. cup in the morning and that kept the headaches at bay.

I'm with Arts137--it's the only drug I have left!

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
