Need Help Getting Thru Holiday Food Challenges

Recommended Posts

It’s here already, the grocery store aisles filled with a dozen kinds of cookie mixes and holiday breads, candy canes and chocolate santas, fruit cakes and eggnog, chocolate oranges and marzipan, hot mulled wine, catalogs filled with gourmet baskets and all sorts of treats. Help! I don’t want to eat this stuff. I’ve had 52 holiday seasons to stuff my face, it’s OK to miss this one. Please give me some support to get through this difficult time without giving in to my food addiction. I’m afraid if I start I won’t stop. :o Thank you friends!

I've been thinking about this too. One strategy I thought of? Well instead of thinking of it as a season thing, limit it to just the day. That means a bit of cheer on thanksgiving day and then again on Christmas Day?

It is something I'm really kind of trying to think about and control now because I found that in the winter months of years gone past, I tended to put on the most weight. Combo of the cold, being covered up and feeling snuggly, holidays, and I think I might of been a bear in a past life trying to bulk up for hibernating! :P

Nothing I used to like tastes good to me now since surgery. You may not even like sweet things anymore. I don't.

Well I'm not sure how far out you are??

But for some that never changes and others the "like" comes back after awhile...

This is a good idea. I will try it on Thxgiving and see how it goes. Since I'll plan to eat my turkey first, there isn't too much danger from OD'ing on pumpkin pie. I decided that this year we will go out - no leftovers! That will make it easier, too.

I din't like sweet things much early on, but now at 3 months it's back  The Queen Anne cherries lurking in the store aisle are going to be the death of me. On a positive note, I just discovered Good Earth Sweet & Spicy herbal tea (decaf) - it's delish and very winter-cozy. It's on sale at costco right now 3 boxes for $6.99.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
