The Clockwork Orange Approach

Recommended Posts

Anyone ever made the analogy before?

Newly banded here (March 6th, 2007) lost 19 pounds in the last 2 weeks... more to go of course but doing fairly well on the liquid stage.

It kind of reminded me about how Alex felt sick when he was tempted to "sin"! Some sort of external restriction on a natural or unnatural, distorted habit!

Well at least no one can force me to lick his shoes unless he keeps hammering my port over and over LOL

and as far as that girl is concerned I don't need a band to keep me away from her...that's my wife's job!!! :(

Ok, I thought this was going to be a reference to the mechanical jobber they used to prop his eyes open. :(

Is everybody THAT old???? Here's more than you want to know.... I remember Clockwork Orange because I was in college doing a social psych experiment where we were trying to replicate the Kitty Genovese incident in NYC where she was assaulted and no one helped. Our team thought that bystanders WOULD intervene if it happened anywhere except NYC. So we staged a beating as people were coming out of a theater. Police knew....theater knew. What we didn't count on was a) they were getting out of Clockwork Orange and were sort of wired about violence, and :( an off duty officer was in the audience in the theater, and had his gun. A warning shot was fired---not in the air mind you---but into the ground. It ricocheted off a rock and hit me in the leg and I ended up in the hospital. Now, we had a guy hiding behind a tree filming this whole thing to present to class, so when we DID present it, clearly showing that bystanders DO intervene, the professor kept the tape to show to future classes how NOT to do a psych experiment.

Well I saw it on the big screen in 1972 and I was 16 then~! I remember it very vividly and I am a big fan of Kubrick! It was also the very first movie I saw in English and my English was quite limited then so I remember annoying my bilingual friend with way too many "What did he say?" and the scene I mentioned of course is the government press conference after his experiment! But it really hit me how close the two experiences are in a way. It's a good thing they were not playing the 9th during the lap band surgery :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
