My son introduced me to sushi when I visited him in California a few weeks ago. The first night we went we ordered over $100 in food so I could try a lot of different things (12 different dishes). I had a bite of each, my son who is a big marine ate all the rest. :-) Everything was good and everything sat well. We ate sushi every other night - we ate Mexican the rest of the time. I am now a sushi fan. The place next door to where I work makes it w/brown rice which I prefer. :-)

My surgery was a year ago.

I think you all know that rice is wasted calories. I used to eat a ton of rice, anyway I could get it. But seriously there are better ways to get a fix on this type of food. If you would like a nice substitute that has lots of Protein why not eat Quinoa. It is delicious and there are lots of asian recipes on the net that substitute Quinoa for rice. Not necessarily sushi but a reasonable exchange that could fix your craving. Having Bariatric surgery means making sacrifices that we all know we had to do to be successful. I don't want you all to think I'm a buzzkill but sushi? I have not eaten it since I decided to have surgery.

Sushi and sashimi are the perfect sized meals for me. I can order 1 roll or one order and have a delicious lunch for $5 with leftovers. I do remove some or most of the rice because it causes me to vomit but I love it.

Where do you live that there exists sushi or sashimi for $5?!!!!! I don't know if I'd eat $5 sashimi!

I started sushi maybe 4 months post-op. Funnily enough it was the only rice I could tolerate for several months. Today at 8 months, any rice is okay in small amounts.

We have a few nice Asian restaurants that have lunch specials; 2 rolls and a salad for $10. I go with my local surgery pals and we share.

It's very little food, but I can't even eat an entire roll, so...

I live in New York. I don't think that kind of deal exists near me! Enjoy.

Those in my support group tell me I will be able to eat anything after a while. However, we all know that rice, bread and that kind of stuff is a bad choice, leaving the entire decision up to the individual. I look at it this way, until I get to my goal weight and switch to a maintanance diet I will avoid carbos and play by the rules. At that point my eating habits should be well controlled and a bit of rice wont be an issue.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
