Swallowing Fluids Right After Surgery

Recommended Posts

I it normal to have issues with swallowing. When I take sips I get a sensation of gas in my esophagus with a bit of pain too. Did anyone else have this happen to them?
Thank you.

yep, just take it slow. Its something with how we swallow, and how much air is swallowed as well. (That's my take, anyway) Try to sit up straight when you're sipping, that seems to help me. And try to wait 5 min or so between sips.

Oh gosh..I couldn't drink hardly anything for days 1-5. But do what she says above..make sure you sit up straight and stay up straight. Remember to take the small sips..but not too small. I would have to watch a timer and time my sips out while in the hospital. Good luck! Oh, I do burp up a lot of air each and every time I have anything at all. That's fairly common..I've heard it referred to as bubble guts among many other things.

Water timer worked great for me- I set an alarm every 5 minutes to take a sip- helped get it down without issue!

I have major issues with getting anything down, crushed ice works best for me. Otherwise I have to force 3-4 burps for every drink I get. I'm on day 4 post op.

This is normal. Day 5-6 I finally was able to drink more. But experiment with lots of calorie free beverages. Tap Water didn't work for me, but propel zero did and still goes down best. I'm 2.5 weeks post op now.

And I sill burp up with each swallow of anything. Think that's normal for at least a while.
