Hello all,

I was banded on Monday November 4th. I have had a pretty good recovery even ran to Wal-Mart for a few things yesterday. I was placed with a 10cc band and found out my surgeon put in 2cc at the time of surgery. I have been taking Dexilant for reflux twice a day for a while (before banding) I am taking now as well. Having said that I started with some slight reflux symptoms on Thursday and then yesterday eve, I felt burning and a little coughing when i went to bed last night. Nothing to keep me awake and NO vomiting. Is my body adjusting or do I need to do something else? Will papaya enzymes work for this? I am not having any issues eating or keeping food down. I feel some pressure in my breast bone when I am getting to my 3rd and 4th tbs, so I just stop wherever I am at and take that as my stopping/full point.

Any advice?

You are newly post op, and your reflux is a bit different, you should talk to your surgeon about this. But in the meantime you probably don't want to advance your diet and only take small teaspoons of food.

If he put 2ccs in there, you are probably still swollen.

If it were me I'd stick to liquids for a few weeks, it sounds like you had a hiatal hernia, did he repair one for you?

Hopefully others will have good responses for you -- definitely something to take seriously! When do up you go back to your surgeon for a follow up visit? One thing we've done for my husband who had terrible reflux (turned out to be wheat!) and then for my parents is to put blocks of wood under the head of the bed to raise slightly. An inch and a half, maybe, just enough to make it not so flat. What are you eating/drinking?

No hernia NaNa. I ate pretty much nothing on Monday and Tuesday, just ice chips and a Protein drink when I got home Tuesday afternoon.

I have been sticking to my guidelines and here is what I have been eating Bandista:

Protein shakes

mashed potatoes

cottage cheese

yogurt

pinto Beans

pudding

creamy chicken Soup

Colby/jack cheese

Water

Crystal Light

Everything above is on my list. I don't go to see my surgeon for three weeks. Should I call now? I am curious if my asthma is trying to flare up and this is affecting my reflux?

I would definitely call! You are their patient and they want to know!

Could you be a little sensitive to dairy right now? Just a shot in the dark......

Eating too close to lie-down time? Again, just long-shot thoughts since it's a Saturday night. Don't stress but get to the bottom of this!

Sending best wishes......

I would call the surgeon if the reflux is really bad, you should not have to wait, also you may want to only do full liquids like Soups until you can figure out what is going on. Also most newly post ops don't really get reflux, the cheese is kind a thick too this early out. You may be progressing too quickly, everyone has different post diet plans, but I did not eat thick cheese or pinto bean until about after 6 weeks post op.

I will call Monday morning. I do not feel too terrible this evening. I kind of feel like I am getting a cold or my allergies are flaring up. Itchy throat and eyes

NaNa.......cheese and pinto Beans are on my list to eat so I am going with it unless Dr says otherwise when I call.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
