Had My First Appt Today; However,

Recommended Posts

I went to the orientation on Wednesday and today I had my first meeting with the surgeon. I think went well because I am going back for the nutrition class. I asked one of the nurses about the requirement from my insurance to get the sleeve, and she said I would have to speak to the coordinator. I called the coordinator, but she is on vacation for the next 11 days. I wanted to ask her if it is true that I have to be on a diet for 6 months before I can have the surgery? Does anyone know if that is true?

It all depends on what your ins requires. Mine did not require it but the majority do still.

Good luck on your journey!

It depends on your insurance company. I was able to find out the requirements for mine by creating an account on their (BCBS) website and just digging around until I found it.

What insurance company do you have? You could search the forum for others who have your insurance as well. The insurance company could give you an answer. But then again, my insurance company told me 1 year of supervised diet. They were wrong, this info was outdated. I actually have no time or diet requirement.

The best thing to do, if you don't want to wait for the coordinator, is to call the number on the back of your insurance card. When you get someone on the line, let them know you want to discuss the details of your coverage regarding bariatric surgery. They can tell you what their requirements are to cover the surgery, what they cover, and what you need to pay out of pocket. They can also tell you if you what you need to submit, and what your doctor needs to do. Your coordinator will be able to help you find all of this, but it might not be a bad idea to call and talk to your insurance company to find out!

I will call BS on Monday and get the low down on my policy. Thank you all for your replies.

I also have a 6 month requirement. I started in June and my last weigh-in is December 6th. After my last appointment the coordinator will submit the paperwork for approval. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
