Mexico Dr Illan Pre-Op Diet?

Recommended Posts

With my Doctor, he only requires one day of liquids the day before surgery. This was a huge relief for me as I have read so many posts about 1 and 2 week liquid diets pre op. But now that I may have to go to Mexico to have this surgery, can you tell me what diet the doctors there require? I am possibly using Dr Illan. But do most Mexico doctors require the same pre op diet and what is it exactly?

Dr. Ill an requires a one week liquid diet unless your bmi is over 50, then it's two weeks. I start mine Monday! Eek!

I'm going to get sleeved by Dr. Illan in a couple of days, and I had to do the pre-op diet for 2 weeks because of my BMI. Was it fun? NO. Was it that bad? Not really. Will it be worth it? I'm sure it will.

Good luck! :)

(Ps- Strained Cream of chicken Soup saved my life! I actually felt full after eating it!)

Thanks kyrie. One week doesn't sound fun to me so I can imagine what two weeks is like. What I don't like is that my United States doctor said one day and a lot of other doctors say one or two weeks. I think to myself if I have it done in Mexico would they really know if I only did it for a few days preop

I wouldn't risk it. Yes, some people cheat (or don't do at all!) their pre-op diet, and they're fine, but the purpose behind it is to shrink your liver so it doesn't crack in half while they're operating. If you've got the stomach for it (hehe) you can watch a video of the process on youtube- they have to actually lift and hold the liver up while they operate.

You could also look at it as a form of easing you in to the new way of eating. If you didn't do preop, then right after surgery you'd be going right from eating large amounts of food to tiny amounts of liquids. I personally think that starting with large amounts of liquids is a good transition.

The way I see it, If I can't handle two weeks of liquids, how am I going to handle the rest of my life with a tiny stomach?

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
