Pain in left side below rib cage

Recommended Posts

I need some reassurance… Ive already call my doctor and I am waiting on a return call.

But here is the situation. I got a stomach virus on Tuesday. I feel nauseated all day. And some chicken I tried to eat that morning (before I felt too bad) seemed to be stuck. By noon I felt like someone had kicked me in the stomach with a boot. My muscles ached. I had a 101 degree fever. I couldn’t even drink Water without feeling sick, and it felt like things weren’t going down properly. <O:p

I threw up a little Water on three separate occasions through out the day. That was all.

By 4 pm fever was worse, I left work early went home and slept. The virus finally passed by about 10pm that night. I no longer felt sick to my stomach and was able to keep chicken broth down and even a little potato Soup.

<O:p</O:p

Next morning I felt a lot better.<O:p</O:p

<O:p</O:p

Then Wednesday even on my LEFT side just below my rib cage I started to get this horrible pain. If I breath deeply, it hurts. If I lay on that side it hurts. If I stretch, it hurts.<O:p</O:p

<O:p</O:p

I am worried that I somehow did something to my band.<O:p</O:p

<O:p</O:p

It was only one day… on time being sick. I was hoping it was just an irritation, but should I still be hurting like this 2 days later? Or should it be easing up.<O:p</O:p

<O:p</O:p

I was just hoping someone else out there had had this happen and might be able to ease my mind.

well, i can feel my port and mine is dead center on my abdomin

this pain is all the way around on my left side... 4-6 inches left of center just below my rib cage.

The doctors office just called. They told me that they werent worried to take aleve and call them monday if it still hurts.

I hate being paranoid, but my side HURTS. I didnt even have this pain after surgery.

Your gallbladder is on your right side, did you write that the pain is on your left side? If so, that is where your port is. Your port is the LAST thing to heal. I'm 3.5 months out and just the other day I had to end my treadmill time because suddenly my port kicked in and started hurting. It was painful enough that I couldn't run anymore. This is normal, it is short lived and will go away.

Your port is likely to the left of your large incision. That isn't a guarantee but that is where they usually are. Mine is right below my rib cage to the left of the big incision.

Duh - I knew that, I had mine out some years ago. Sorry for the confusion!

I'm not a doctor but those were my flu symptoms a couple weeks back. It passed about 3 days into it.

like the pain I had right after surgery. It lasted for a few weeks. The surgeon said that the pain sounded like my diaphragm was inflammed. They said that it can be easily inflammed and they probably irritated it during the surgery.

Your lap band is right up close to your diaphragm. Did you do a lot of coughing or any vomiting that may have caused the band to rub up against your diaphragm?

Just a thought :(

I got the flu awhile back. Closed everything right up! Couldn't eat, could hardly drink. When it went away I had what felt like a bad gas pain...left side and right shoulder. Awful. It went away and I'm fine. But I feeeeeel your pain!

The shoulder pain was probably diaphram irritation. Our diaphrams can't register pain in themselves but display irritation through pain in the left shoulder. And after a flu and being swollen from vomitting it would be expected that there may be some diaphram irritation or port pain from straining all the muscles in your abdominal area.

I agree with myfoursons and waterlily.

It is called kerrs sign, and is caused by irritation to the phrenic nerve that runs along the diaphram.

I had that pain for a few weeks, and between the gas, and some possible seepage from Fluid, it was very annoying.

Good luck, it will pass. I went back on pain meds when it kicked up, per my doctor's oreders.

I joined yesterday when I was struggling with this preop diet...
It typically comes and goes, the hard times and easier times. I'm on day 6 of 14 shakes, water, sf Popsicles and jello. And I might actually be losing my mind. But, oh dear lord has the fear set in. Not about the surgery itself, but life afterwards. If I feel this crappy on the preop diet, am I going to feel like this forever after?
I know most of the answers are no, not forever. It might be worse after for a while, then get better. I know it's a more of a mental challenge than physical after the first couple weeks of healing. I get all of that. But I'm starting to feel scared about losing myself afterwards.
It might be my hormones or desire to chew something salty talking.. It may go away soon or tomorrow.. I can hope, anyway. But right now.. The fear is real.

And this liquid diet can bite me.

Fear is normal, but if it makes you feel any better, I'm 4.5 months post-op and the pre-op diet was by far the hardest part of the whole process. There will be challenges and a lot of new things to learn, but I can honestly say at this point I feel so much more "back to normal" and was even able to go on a week-long vacation with my kids without stressing over it. It's so worthwhile.

@NickelChip This actually does make me feel better! Thank you so much! After the onslaught of Covid, we've all had to deal with a "new normal", so I know it's possible. It's just the fear and frustration in this moment that makes me question if I can find another "new normal" afterwards. The thought of just a few more months seems daunting some times, but I really do appreciate input and real experience. I'll use that to get me through for a few more hours! LOL. Thank you so much! And I'm glad everything is going so well for you! ❤️

I started my 10 day pre op diet yesterday I need flavor!! I'm not big on the chocolate protein shakes so I just got to use up what I have was thinking about freezing it to make it like a ice cream so its something I can chew a little. Idk this is hard but I know I can do it just need to find new things to try

You can try. I've read other people have had good results with protein-shake popsicles, etc. My personal experience with it? Sucked.

I tried making 'fudgesicles' with a couple different flavors of a premade shake, as well as a protein powder I blended myself and all of them came out revolting? The powder ones, all the protein sunk to the middle; the premade shakes, the popsicle had a disgusting texture and the protein seemed to leave a weird fluffy film on the outside? I couldn't stomach it.

Maybe look into flavoring additives? I was able to have sugar-free coffee /soda syrup flavorings, sugar-free drink flavorings and baking additives like almond, rum or pepperment extract. The extracts helped me the most as they added no extra sweetener.

On the other hand, if you can get your hands on an unflavored/unsweetened protein powder, the syrup flavorings are perfect. I love to use Boost "Just Protein" (which is unflavored) with milk and a Chai-flavored sugarfree syrup.

        Good luck!
