Pain in the diaphragm area

Recommended Posts

Dr. Kuhn was my surgeon. I am 6 years out from my surgery date. Last year I started having pain in the diaphragm area. I have been having this pain for a full year now still same area. My gastrologist has run test, scope, untrasound, CT scan. checked the upper colon duct and pancreas and has found nothing that would indicate why I am having this pain. Last year I had a pacemaker installed and my surgeon told me that my pain I had (between the breast) was probably not where I was having my pain. He told me my pain was in the diaphragm and that it was probably Acid Reflux. I have had acid reflux years before my RNY surgery. Since I had lost 165 pounds I no longer have had any reflux at all since 1-1/2 yrs after my surgery. I never had any pain associated with the reflux. I went ahead like my heart surgeon said and got back on my meds for reflux and it has not helped at all. I have been on 2 different scripts and 3 different over the counter meds. I am still having the pain. Strange thing is I only have the pain any where from 1 - 5 times a month. August, I hurt 5 times during the month,Sept, 2 times, Oct. 2 times. I have been unable to pin point it to any food. I have always hurt during the night, the pain would wake me up, but in Sept. and Oct. I would hurt during the day and would feel a little nauseous but not throw up. The Gastrologist told me he has done all he can do except exploratory surgery. Since I am only hurting 1 to 5 times a month I am not willing to do that yet. Have any other patients every complained of this type of pain? I have an appointment coming up to see Dr. Kuhn the end of the month. Wondering if you could give me some suggestions of what type of questions to ask him. Would this pain have anything to do with the pouch?

Thank You.

The reason I had RNY was due to this same sounding pain. My doc told me it was esophageal spasms and gerd related; that this surgery would help. I had my surgery in Feb and I still have the pains! They doc prescribed me nitro to take as needed/when I have the "attack" and it helps immediately. I hope you get it figured out. Good luck.

Do you have your gall bladder?
.

No I do not have a gallbladder. I have had several abdominal surgeries but the Gastrologist also did not find any adhesions.

So that is ruled out. Don't see how it could be the pouch as it is actually located below the left breast, but definitely wouldn't rule it out. Pain is strange and radiates to different parts of the body. It could be what One Day At A Time says she has and that would be worth a try to see if it works. The only other thing that is close to the area you describe is the liver and pancreas. Just hope they find an answer for you. Good luck.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
