Why are some surgeons against the RNY?

Recommended Posts

Ok I'm pre-op.... Was traveling two hours to a surgeon and then found out about the non-covered fee.... Began exploring my options and I found a surgeon closer to me only 45 minute drive and he only does the Duodenal Switch and the Sleeve....nurse told me on the phone that he will discuss why he does not do the RNY at the seminar.....I'm just curious now because I notice that surgeons are pretty biased about which surgeries they do and why? I also notIced the new surgeon repairs RNYs to DS...anyhow, I'm now considering the Sleeve because it seems like there are less complications..... I hate to say it but, on these message boards I hear a lot of people having problems with the RNY and not so much on the Sleeve forums...... I'm so confused.... Someone mentioned a WLS decision workbook and I ordered one from Amazon. Did anybody go from sleeve to RNY? If so why? Thanks!

From many many hours of research..discussions..doctor visits.. One big thing is how much weight you need to lose. I originally wanted the sleeve however my main issue is that yiu cant find long term research on it and that bothers me. Two..with being 305 and needing to lose 155lbs(if not more) the RNY produces better results. I see a few short term complications from RNY but rarely very serious. I for the first time last week found someobe who DID regret it. However. ..her weight loss was amazing. She regretted it for more mental/depression issues. Anywho! I have researched the sleeve as well and if I were you I would decide based on weight and of course finding a surgeon your comfortable with

Be mindful that all bariatric surgeons aren't skilled in every type of bariatric surgery. There are surgeons out there that will discourage you from having a surgery that they don't perform. I would try to find a surgeon that is skilled in both surgeries so that you can get an unbiased assessment of the best surgery for you.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
