Anger issues post-op

Recommended Posts

I am wondering if anyone has experienced what I am. I am 4 weeks post rny and my temper is horrid. I get SO mad so easily it is crazy! I feel like I am angry all the time... has anyone else experienced this after surgery?

Sometimes anger is a symptom of depression. Especially is it occurs because you are aggravated at everything.

Yes. I posted about that in another thread this morning. I am just one week post op and not all that angry, but crying a lot...over really stupid things! Get well cards, food, my husband eating real food (okay, that one kinda makes me want to punch him) but you get the idea. Even when I do get angry, I just want to cry.

I actually do suffer from depression and am on medication for it.

I hear ya as well! My emotions is off the charts sometimes since my rny. The sad thing I cry when watching Long Island medium! Yesterday it was David tutera. Good lord I feel like I was when I was prego. I think my hormones are so off as I need to get back on my bc pills. The days are going by so damn slow and I hate the food I'm stuff with. What I would give to chew! Lol.

I think we're just feeling the emotions that before the surgery we used to stuff down and avoid with food! Now our drug of choice / prop isnt there, we actually have to feel those emotions (and deal with them). It's hard but it's a much more natual way of living in the end :-)

Yes! This makes so much sense! Not only was food a comfort for me, but as far as anger goes I always turned to cigarettes. I quit smoking 2 wks before surgery cuz they wouldnt of done it if I hadnt. So now I dont have cigs or food to deal with emotions!

Yes My husband has said to me several times that my personality has changed a lot since the surgery (Oct. 1,2013). I wasn't sure why. Thanks for understanding.

I'm almost 3 weeks post-op from lapband and I find that my anger creeps up during the famous witching hour - dinner time... and I'm not sure exactly why but my pain level goes up too - it's nice to hear that it's pretty standard around here :) and that it hopefully subsides at 4-6 weeks post-op.

Withdrawls suck - no matter what the "drug" of choice - food is the worse, I bet it's worse than heroin and cigs mostly b/c you have to feed your family and you really need to eat to survive albeit tiny tiny portions and no sugar no carbs.

So, when I do fly off the handle nearly every night, I apologize to my beautiful family and tell them it's hard where I'm at but I'm trying and I promise 2014 will be the best year of their lives :)

Give a read to the post, "things I won't miss about being fat" - that will give you a little boost in inspiration and eat some SF Jello - I say as much as I can not stand sugar free anything the SF Jello is saving my fat behind b/c it's cool, fruity and satisfying all for that few minutes I'm shoving it in my pie hole.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
