Weight loss and BMs

Recommended Posts

Sorry guys. TMI. But here goes.

I am 8 weeks post op and have lost almost no weight. I lost about 5lbs right at first... Then nothing. I eat right... Lean meats and legumes mostly... A little oatmeal when i feel carb starved.

I also have had severe Constipation. I cant go without copious amounts of stool softners and mirolax and i have to resort to magnesium citrate fairly regularly. When i do go, its a very small amount and seems like it is just scootching around a big blockage.

Im making a doc appt this week as im afraid im going to create a laxative dependency. In the meant time.... Could this lack of bm evacuation be causing me to not loose. I know the stool itself weighs alot when impacted, but i am wondering if impaction will actually keep your malabsorption from working propperly?

Thanks for your thoughts on this

I'll be two months the 11th. Since surgery I have gone from 3 to 4 BM's daily to about one every other day. I use to be banded and that doctor ordered Benafiber rather than a stool softner as the diet doesn't give you enough Fiber in your system. Also that is why they want you to push fluids. I am sorry you haven't lost much weight as that sucks. Yes, you do need to speak with your doctor in case there are issues.

Idk that it would keep the malabsorption from working but it does make you mighty uncomfortable....the longer it goes on you can risk being impacted or perhaps other complications. I know I pretty much rely on flax seed oil caps( started about 4 months out when I could swallow one that big) daily that helps me keep going as well as senna at times. I also bought the whole flax seeds and sprinkle in my yogurt and salads. Just a part of my natural kick. Dulcolax and Milk of mag are helpful when you need to really get things up and moving. I think Constipation is

A pretty common thing post rny with all of the Protein etc. Hope you get something that works and gets you moving and feeling better :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
