Be prepared for liquid pre op

Recommended Posts

The dreaded pre op liquid diet, some doctors require it some dont, some its 2 weeks others 2 days. Whatever they require they ask you to do it for a reason. Not to starve you to death, torture you or see if you can stay on a diet, its to shrink your liver and prepare your body.

First thing more important than what you will be eating or should I say drinking is get your HEAD in the game! This pre op is the first step, you have to be mentally ready.

Prepare you kitchen, get rid of temptation! Have kids and just have to have all the fattin sugary Snacks in the house lock it up if need be or maybe make this a time to get your family involved in a healthy lifestyle, but dont let that be an excuse take charge.

Know exactly what you can have, how much and when. If your NUT does not hand you a sheet and says if its not on here you cant have it...ask ask ask they are there to help you. Once again all programs are different, many will say 3 shakes a day thats it but if you ask or say you just cant do that they may allow cream Soup, yogurt sf pudding and sf jello...so once again ask!

We all want to succeed at this change and this is just one of those steps to get there, a small price for this journey.

Good luck to all pre ops!

I'm on day 5 of my pre op. My doc doesn't require liquids, just a 1400 calorie diet. What I'm doing now is trying to transition to how I will eat after surgery, making Protein the priority. The first two days were rough, much better now.

Thanks for the encouragement, Truckerchic! My pre-op is Thursday and 10 days of liquids will begin after that. I'm mentally willing to do it, but not sure how "able" my body is to do it. I get headaches, shaky and irritable if I don't eat. I think it is related to a drop in blood sugar. I do intend to mention my concerns and see what modifications can be made if I have those reactions.

I have found when switching to high Protein low carb diet I get the same way sipping some fat free broth really helps and my NUT counts that as water!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
