Welcome to LBT Laura! Alabama, we have family there. It's so much different from Missouri. No matter where we go in their little town, people say hi! I love the friendliness we see there! Good luck with your journey to a new life and if you have questions, let us know!

Hey Laura, where are you and which doc are you using? I'm in Deatsville (bedroom community to Montgomery/Prattville) and had my first consult this past week w/ Dr. Schmitt in B'ham. Gotta get some blood work and paper work done before I'll get a band date.

Niec, we're not a little podunk city, but I know what you mean! LOL

I have a consult with (watch me butcher the name) Dr. Fuccundus in Huntsville, AL. From the research I did and support groups I contacted in the area, he came recommended. I was going to look at Birmingham doctors, but from my experience when I have any sort of operation-I do not want to travel.. I want to be able to go straight home, and the 2 hour drive from Birmingham didn't sound appealing.

I had my surgery with Dr. Schmitt in Birmingham on December 18. I have lost 25 lbs. I cant say enough about Dr. Schmitt. He was wonderful and I have had a GREAT experience with him during my fills. You will be glad that you used Dr. Schmitt crabcake.

Crabcake,

I was on liquids for 2 weeks, but you will get to do heavy liquids at 2weeks. Heavy liquids are like Tomato Soup, puddings, yogurts, and stuff like that. You gradually go from liquids to solid foods. When you go from liquids to heavy liquids you feel like you are getting real food. You go from heavy liquids to mushy like mashed potatoes. When it is time you will know and the doctor will give you something to go by. Dr. Schmitt and his office are really great about answering questions. I asked a million the first month.

I'm from Alabama also. I had lap band surgery on Sept. 14, 06 in Decatur, Al by Dr. Adams. I know lots of people who have gone to Dr. Funcundus in Huntsville. Most are RYN however. Good luck. I love my band!

Well, I'm hyped for it now, now I can't wait to get all the preliminary things out of the way. My sister plans on getting it done if things go well for me. My brother would probably follow suit. My parents made some big kids!! My sister is younger and is 6'0 280lb, my brother is 6'8 350lb and I am 6'0 330lb. Eeek!

I am so glad to see so many posts from Bama today. I am scheduled for surgery 3/20/07 with Dr. Adams in Decatur Alabama. I would love to hear stories from anyone who has also used Dr. Adams.

Thanks!:)

Just wanted to add, another reason I'm going with this Doctor is because he is with Crestwood Medical, and Crestwood is like a resort.. they're a for-profit hospital, so the rooms are really fancy and the staff is great. Anytime I have to have surgery I try to get it done at Crestwood instead of Huntsville Hospital, just so I know I will be treated like I'm paying out the wazoo! LOL

Angie,

Dr. Adams in Decatur is my surgeon. He is very straightforward and can be very blunt. I really like him. I got the impression at the hospital that he is one of the "picky"surgeons(which I think is great). I want picky when it's my body! He is strict on the pre-op and post-op diets. The 7 days after surgery of clean liquids was rough. I think you'll like him unless you get your feelings hurt easily. He will tell you like it is.

:) I am trying to gather everything I need for the post-op diet. Dr. Adams requires 2 oz. of Diabetishield 4 times a day for the first 6 days. I have not been able to find this anywhere and no one seems to know what I am talking about. Can anyone help? What store might have this in Decatur or Moulton? Thanks!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
