New TONS of Questions Surgery Nov/Dec

Recommended Posts

Hi All

I have a genetic disorder called achalaisa its rare and NO fun cause violent vomitting episodes malabsorption issues weakness and can lead to cancer. The original surgery to correct this is very risky. Due to my weight I can do a modified bypass that will accomplish the same thing but is safer for me. So I am being fast tracked which is good but everything is happening so fast and I have so many questions. My tentative surgery date is November 21st they might move it but no later than December. So here are my questions:

How quickly are you up and about after surgery?

Does wearing a binder or something Spanx like help after surgery like it does after giving birth?

On average how much weight do you lose the 1st month? By 3 months?

How quickly can you exercise after surgery?

What are your best tips to prevent saggy skin?

Do cravings go away after surgery?

How do family & friends react as you lose weight? I haven't even begun and have gotten some odd reactions.

I am sure I have a bazillion more questions but thats good for now :)

How quickly are you up and about after surgery? You should walk that night. You should be walking the halls by the next day. You'll have to get rid of all that air.

Does wearing a binder or something Spanx like help after surgery like it does after giving birth? Waste of money for me. I bought binders and ended up not using them. You might get some control top panties.

On average how much weight do you lose the 1st month? By 3 months? This isn't answerable. You will lose as your body loses and I lose as my body loses. Period. I thought I was going to fail again. I was sure I was. BUT this surgery will work and you can just relax and let it...but you won't because we have to worry. I've lost 114 pounds in 6 1 /2 months. It seems pretty average of the Gastric Bypass.

How quickly can you exercise after surgery? Again, you'll be walking that day. Just add more as you are comfortable.

What are your best tips to prevent saggy skin? Do you like the skin better full of fat? Saggy skin happens because it's been stretched past max capacity for so long. It's not that bad. If I ever have enough money, I'll get a thigh lift, Tummy Tuck, boob lift and arm job. If not? No big deal. I look okay with my clothes on. Most will end up lumpy and bump and wiggly and jiggly. But you'll be able to move more and enjoy life. Hydrate with Water, use lotion and tone. That's all you can do. A 20 year old will bounce back better than someone in their late 30s like me and I probably came back more than someone in their late 40s. It is what it is and it's not a miracle surgery. It's a tool. I'd much rather have my jiggly bits than fat bits. My husband griped cuz my hip bone was poking him on the couch. I'm no longer "comfortable" to lounge upon. Awesome.

Do cravings go away after surgery? Hunger went away for me. Not cravings. Most cravings start in your head. You have to know yourself and your triggers. I'm not a dumper. I've lost 114 pounds. If I want a mini kit kat? I eat it. If I want a cookie, I have it. I can't eat enough of it to hurt me...and you'll find some will villainize you for not being a dumper on this board. "you're sabatoging yourself!" Not really. Everything in moderation. I can have 5 M&Ms and be fine. Cuts my craving and is tiny. I eat a lot of dry Cereal as Snacks and

Cheez it Zings. My absolutely favorite. I live off greek yogurt and turkey sticks, mainly.

How do family & friends react as you lose weight? I haven't even begun and have gotten some odd reactions: It's odd. My mister is way more attentive and obviously attracted to me. My friends are happy for me. I have one person that I work with that is....I don't know,. Perhaps jealous. I don't allow others to determine my emotions though. And I'm HAPPY

Thank you so much this is extremely helpful. I figured saggy skin is part of it but I read on another board that if you follow the tips its not as bad but no one mentioned the tips or answered me. I read how some relationships change and marriages don't survive and I was curious. My best friend seems to already be having issues and she had lap band bit is hostile I am getting this done. I found it odd and a bit hurtful I have been so sick I thought everyone would be glad an end is in sight. My oldest son is also being odd. Asking me well how much weight will you lose? Why do you need this? Do you have to? I don't understand this because untreated I can die. Congrats on your 114 I hope I am as blessed as you. Thanks again :)

Hi everyone.

I so far am still in the process of my journey to begin. I have completed 6 months of doctor visits and now just started my six months in the program. I just had my Phyc eval and am getting ready to start the nutritional classes. I figured if everything goes right I'll get the RNY in March or April. I know it's kinda far out there but is there anyone out there in the same boat as me. It would be nice to have someone to talk to that's in the same place as me. I guess I kinda wanna a RNY buddy.

I had my surgery on 7/23/13. I woke up from surgery with a binder and it was a lifesaver for me for the first 1-2 weeks. Everyone is different though. I am down 75 pounds since starting this journey and although I had some problems in the beginning, I have no regrets. I would do it again in a heartbeat. Friends and family have been very supportive. Good luck on your journey!

Congrats on the 75lbs!!!! Thats amazing. If you don't mind what is your workout routine? I would love results like that :) Thanks about the binder I was on the fence. It helped so much after my c-sections with my kids but everyone is different. I have fantastic support with my family. It was my first day reading up on everything and it was overwhelming.

It can be overwhelming but I find it really helpful to learn As much as I can. This is a great site to get info. Having support is so helpful. I have problems with my ankle and knees so I haven't really been able to develop a workout routine. I try to walk as much as I can tolerate.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
