What Day After Surgery Was Your Worst?

Recommended Posts

Mine is today, 3rd day after 10/15 surgery. I came home yesterday at 2:30 pm. As long as I was in the hospital, getting morphine, fluids, aceteminiphen drip, nausea shots and walking a lot I felt decent. I passed a lot of gas by burping and did walk about 3 - 4 times per day the day of the surgery and the day after. The nausea started last night. I got some meds for that and have to take it before I can take the Loratab. The nausea meds only give me about a 2 hour window without nausea to get some Proteins in. I am drinking sips of Water even when nauseous.

4th and 5th. For me, those days were the worst for glass pains.

For me, I think it was about the third day, then a breeze since. The most discomfort I had was pulling myself forward in my recliner to get up. I finally switched to my other recliner which is a lift recliner, then all things settled down. Only problem I am having now is that I can't eat things like deli meat which is on my list to try, so I eat like tuna salad, chicken salad, egg salad, Wendy's chilli, cottage cheese, string cheese, sf puddings, and I can eat crackers with the chilli and T & C salads, but limited. Anything that is moist goes down quite well and stays. Otherwise, I slime and then it comes up. Uck.

Immediately after surgery, I guess the first 24 hours were bad and that was just due to the pain, I had no nausea or anything like that just pain. I walked a lot which helped with the gas too !!! After the first 24 hours each hour after that I got better and better :)

I just got home from the hospital yesterday (my surgery was 10/15). I'd have to say that the first 24hrs were by far the worst. I didn't understand the pain, and not being able to make myself become comfortable in any position really messed with me. The nausea wasn't too bad, but definitely there.

My nausea was the worst right after waking up. My pain was the worst right after they took me off of the pain pump. I was miserable. I was all good tho by day 3

I didn't really have any pain. I was uncomfortable like I had just done some major workout and my back and stomach muscles were the target. However that got better by day 3. Also I was really only feeling sick the day after surgery... and now when I take my pills. It passes quickly though! I will be 4 weeks out Monday!

The 2nd day after surgery. I had been able to sleep a few hours that night without all the beeping of the machines (still in the hospital but out of the ICU). So I hadn't pressed my pain meds button while I was sleeping. When I woke up I was in so much pain I couldn't move. I had to press the button every 10 minutes for the next hour to get the pain down enough to get up and go use the bathroom.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
