So hi! Im super duper excited cause I have been blessed with the oppurtunity to have WLS done. I couldnt be more excited. Heres a little backgrounnd on me. Im 21, Im overweight and Im a single mother. Initially I was leaning towards the sleeve because I actually know someone who got it and it worked very extremely well for her. So I was approve for getting the sleeve which came as a shocker to me because I am on medi-cal and they typically dont cover it since its such a new procedure but anyhow I was approved and I did all my labs the psych eval went to the dietician mam and everythkng except the upper endoscopy. Im getting that done on the 21st then when the gi dr gets the results in I'll get my surgery day. This process has gone by so quickly for me and I feel very blessed. I decided to switch to the bypass instead because it has more information back up though. But it wasnt a problem they also approved me for the bypass. Im so super excited to be recieving this tool so I can be healthier for my son and myself as well! CareFirst is an amazing insurance. They are just on top of everything. At first i was told I need to do a 6 month diet thing but the insurance brought up the point that I had already done that when I had my gallbladder removed last year. They have made live easier and the process much quicker and Im soooo excited. :) cant wait to be on the losing bench!

Congrats on the approval, think you made the right decision. Nothing against the sleeve, but it is newer than the lapband and the research is coming in fast and furious on the failure rate of the band. Bypass, this is my opinion, is the one that has been studied over the 30 years it has been around. Remember though this is just a tool, there is a lot of work that goes with it. But you'll see great results on the road to a newer you. Keep posting, it helps newbies and if there is a problem someone on the forum will be more than happy to help or guide you in the right direction.

I absolutely understand its just a tool. Im totally prepared and willing to make the lifestyle changes required to get the best results I possibly could. I will also use this site as a tool of some sort too. As a way of distraction and an information too. :) I appriciate your response an thank you for your advice!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
