POST-OP HUNGER IN MY HEAD

Recommended Posts

This is crazy. I'm about 5 days post op and I "think" I'm hungry! I want to eat! Anything but fluid!!!!! Is this normal? Is this just me being completely over the Fluid stage?? I refuse to fail, but dang this is aggravating!!! I'm drinking 2.5/3 shakes daily to get my Protein in. I have tried Unjury unflavored and chicken Soup flavor to try and get some variety, it was NASTY. So I'm stuck with sweet shakes, broth, and Water with whatever flavoring I use. I need some words of wisdom from those of you that have successfully found their way around/through this DULL stage.

Unfortunately in this stage, things can get seriously awful. Try to remind yourself that it's not forever. :) try shaking things up a bit... Maybe take a sip of Pickle Juice for a different flavor? I also put a tsp of ketchup in my chicken broth and mixed it well. Gave it a bit of a tangy flavor. You could also try brewing your own home made Decaf iced tea with some mint or citrus in it. :) maybe heat up some VERY diluted apple juice and add in some cinnamon or pumpkin pie spice! Add some pumpkin pie spice to a vanilla Protein Shake or even some decaf coffee! This is the stage where creativity is key to survival! Hahaha good luck! You can do it!!

Yep you are 100% normal. Your next stage will more than likely be the surge of hormones. That stage is fun - you still can't really eat and now your hormones are going nuts! So you end up crying and then crying a little more. Then your next stage is your first stall. During that stage remember you are normal and you will start losing again. Finally you start to feel better and better everyday.

It is a journey, and one I am thankful I have gone through. Stick with it and ask questions on this site. Remember we have all been through or going through it at that time. I am 15 months post op and can't believe how much my life has changed.

Head hunger is horrible, and if you give into it, like I have, you definitely know it. My pouch lets me know within minutes and thank goodness I have a waste basket next to me when it happens. Not fun, lesson learned. When your head signals you better stop eating, I now do.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
