Can you all recommend some affordable, not-so-sweet Protein powders? I know there is unflavored Unjury, which I plan to get, and unjury chicken broth flavored powder, which i am considering, but are there any flavored protein powders that are kinda sweet'ish. I have a powerful sweet tooth BUT can't handle things that are too sweet.. and I'm PRE-op. I can only imagine that sensitivity getting stronger. I'd like a powder with a hint of sweetness but all the ones I've tried are very, very sweet. I'd forgotten how sweet they are until today when I made one (been a few months since the clinic told me to stay away from them because I'll be sick of them post-op, better to to make a bad thing worse by getting sick of them now) but I was trying a recipe for a caramel frap Protein Drink and 2 hours later I sit STILL trying to get it down (not even half done) because its overwhelmingly sweet :( Any ideas??

To draw an analogy that may help you to understand my position on sweet, think about cake. Imagine there are 3 types of ppl in the world when it comes to sweets. Ones that don't like cake at all (prefer salty to sweet for example), ones that like the cake but not the icing because its too sweet and ones that like the icing BECAUSE its so sweet. I fit in the second category. Literally. I like cake because it has a subtle hint of sweetness but hate icing because one bite and I've had more than my fill of sweets.

The unjury chicken Soup Protein mix is my salvation. The savory flavor is a welcome change from the sweet drinks. You can also mix unflavored Protein with chicken, beef or turkey broth, but I prefer their Soup mix.

You might also try Carnation's Breakfast Essentials (blue box is the sugar free version) to make a chocolate milk drink. Made with 1% milk, it has 21g of protein. Unjury's chocolate Splendor is very good, especially over ice. Not as sweet as the fruit flavored things.

Try to get sample packs of the various protein mixes before you buy in quantity to save yourself expensive mistakes. Bariatric Advantage has free samples if you call. Unjury has a sample pack for $14 or $21, depending where you order from. BJ's Bariatrics has a good 10 pack of Syntrax nectar samples.

It also helps to thin some of the mixes down with more Water or milk if they are too sweet. I got tired of the thick shake like consistency so hand mix many of my drinks to make it more like flavored milk. Almost always, I prefer to have them icy cold--much easier to take!

You could always do 1/2 strength Protein Powder with the same amount of milk. That may help. Or mix half of your favorite flavor with half unflavored. I usually just use more milk and less powder when they are too sweet. :) Hope that helps!

I hadn't thought of that!! I didn't want to give up Protein, and considering it will be hard getting stuff in I didn't want to make it harder by diluting it, but your half n half idea sounds great!! Thanks!!

also, you could add powdered milk for extra Protein if you don't like the unflavored stuff. (I didn't). Especially if you're into some of the big Proteins that are 20+ g per serving, if you mix half of one with 10 oz of milk, you're still getting about 20g of protein. not too shabby! ;)

GNC has a Protein drink mix that is tropical punch flavor and you mix it with Water. It is pretty good.

I use Jay Robb chocolate or vanilla whey Protein powders made with stevia.

They in my opinion they are light and not overly sweet.

You can purchase individual packets to try.

They make other flavors I believe.

Good luck in finding something you like.

I also think the drinks are too sweet. I'm pre-surgery now, operation is October 15. I've been doing the following to help. I mix 1 pkg of decaffeinated coffee with 8 oz skim milk and 1 scoop Unjury vanilla Protein powder. I mix 1 heaping teaspoon unsweetened cocoa powder with 8 oz skim millk and 1 scoop Unjury chocolate Splendor protein powder. I know the cocoa powder probably has a little caffeine just because it's chocolate. That's the only way I can drink them. As for other Protein Drinks, I like the Zero Carb Isopure RTD Coconut because it isn't sweet. It's almost clear and is made with coconut Water. You have to like coconut, though.

You have to like coconut (which I do) and DISHWATER (which I don't) because that is what it tastes like.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
